It's only a fine for dangerous overtaking, would you support anyone who wants to overtake dangerously?

Wouldn't surprise me. I just hope the same would apply to cyclists who commit similarly danderous moves.

The two wheeled trafpol in the background don't seem unduly concerned about the outrageous manoeuvre being performed by the renault driver.
Or is it the bike undertaking the car which is turning left?

Does that work both ways? So if a cyclist over/undertakes in less than a metre gap they get fined; and filtering between lanes would require a two metre gap.

The risks are vastly different, it's a physics thing...

Do you support dangerous overtakers then?

You should get the same fine for overtaking any road user dangerously... I'll never deliberately hold up other road users just for the fun of it, but the idiots that will sneak past a cyclist when another vehicle is coming towards them should have some penalty applied.
There are those cyclists with cameras who do seem to have some joy in annoying motorists so they can have an adverse reaction on camera, well they should have their seatpost shoved where the sun doesn't shine.
In every demographic there's a twunt!

Top quality journalism.

Btw, since 12th March 2015, the maximum fine for careless driving isn't £5000. It's unlimited.

I've gone into a bend, leaned over and had the bonnet of a car under my head. £5000? Not nearly enough.

I already thought that you have to give them a car's width? I.e. Pretend they're a car (width wise) when you overtake them

Best all get dashcams. Would be too easy for one of them to run a red light, hit your car and then claim it was your fault.

According to another paper it's £100 not £5000

Hmm, so police enforcement kit consists of a ruler and a time machine? Whatever happened to the idea that a good law was one you could enforce? As has been already said, quality journalism!

Like others, I've been overtaken far too closely, last van than did it got vigorously banged on the side. In his defence though, he did at least apologise - a motoring concept nearly unheard of these days.

The comments though show exactly why most us have prejudices against readers of that paper

Daily Wail violent car driving reader said:
I was once hit by a cyclist using pedestrian crossing when my lights were on green. Pedestrians were waiting and he rode straight into my front wing and sailed over my bonnet. As I got out he jumped up and rode off leaving me to pay for the dented wing. Also in my village we have a 20mph limit and many of my freinds have been over taken by mad cyclists. They should be insured and have recognition numbers at least. Pass me and I will stop them and pucnch their lights out.
Overtake and I'll commit road rage. Hmm, trafpol will keep a weather eye out for him then...

...and how much Police resource will be made available to be allocated to this? None. Thought so.

Or will it be "policed" by camera?

£5k? People pay less than that for monumental f*** ups let alone getting a bit close to a cyclist!

Don't get me wrong, I think people should give them space. I followed a chap on a fairly narrow road last night and I'm sure he was expecting me to gun it past. I couldn't see round him enough to give him space so waited. Then passed him with as much room as possible. Sadly this isn't always the case and people squeeze them out, which is bloody dangerous no doubt.

Thing is there's also that element of blame on some cyclists where they deliberately take up room and make it difficult for drivers. I've seen 2-3 cyclists side by side with that whole self entitled attitude and it has wound drivers up. A bit of balance would be nice but yet again the motorist is penalised.

I'd welcome a minimum safe passing distance.

I encounter a lot of idiot drivers on the roads when driving, but when cycling that figure probably triples.

You often people that overtake you then cut in on front of you to turn left 2 seconds later so you either have to ram on the brakes, or plough into their car.

Or people that almost graze you passing so close when they have a whole other lane they could use.
