Lovely clear morning bank holiday morning at 7 am.
Not another car on the stretch of road.
Camera van at bottom of hill behind a sign.
Ticket for 81 in a 70 and I assume 100 notes down.

This is clearly just money making and not road safety. No decent copper would have stopped anyone for doing that.

It's seems Dorset police are horrendous for dishing these out. Only 2 times I have had tickets were from them.

Glad I wasn't caught doing more but am I the only one that thinks this is an annoying getting caught speed?!

Surely the most "decent copper" would be the one who is best at enforcing the law? Rather than the one who decides to ignore a particular law because you don't think it's fair...

Not to worry I am sure that it being Dorset you will be offered a Driver Awareness Course assuming eligibility. The Dorset PCC is annoyed because those exceeding the speed limit, but not at or above the prosecution threshold, "are breaking the law but we do not prosecute them.".
He said "We are seeing deaths and serious injury casualty figures go up both nationally and in Dorset for the first time in many years… The police have got to implement the law but I think we need to look at educating the greater public and try to improve driving skills... The other thing I want to do, and I am still working out the logistics of it is that we only prosecute someone who drives at 36mph in a 30mph zone. So anyone driving from 31 to 35 is breaking the law but we do not prosecute them."
Remember that in Dorset the No Excuse Operation is ongoing and the surplus from the Dorset Scheme, which is not part of the National Scheme, pays for the mobile and fixed speed camera operations.

If you've been sent a ticket for 81 the chances are your speedo was showing 85ish plus.

So not really that annoying, more careless I'd suggest?

Not for once am I condoning the ridiculously high handed approach of the camera van enforcement policy, or the too low limits on decent safe roads by the way, but I really wouldn't complain if caught in the circumstances that would seem to apply.

You think it is annoying, I think it is annoying, most people think it is annoying...it's supposed to be annoying.

Wow!, what are you?, fcensoredking 13? - Sure sounds like it with a pathetic response like that!

At least Teebs has made a proper contribution to this thread (which is far more than you have!): BlueEyedBoy chose to break the speed limit, got caught and now life's not fair? - Tough scensoredt! (And I say that as an habitual speeder who rarely sticks to the speed limit and who has had his fair share of stops and points for speeding).

Saying that though, I can understand why BlueEyedBoy is upset - I mean, 81 in a 70 mph limit? What kind of girlie speed is that to be caught breaking the speed limit?

C'mon BlueEyedBoy, If you're going to speed, make some fcensoredking effort!

AFAIK the majority of camera vans are operated by civilians rather than uniformed warranted officers and Dorset Road Safe is one of them. The camera is the enforcer, the human is relegated to a mere button presser. A 70 limit must be a d/c as Dorset is one of the few English counties with no motorway. If it had been a cop in a traffic car the OP might have received words of advice rather than a ticket. Increasing automation means the human element is ever diminishing. The element of discretion remains an important part of policing in this country and its eradication is not good for the consensus on which our system relies.

I commend this to the PH collective especially given its authorship - http://www.policemag.co.uk/editions/720.aspx

You broke the law, and then complain when you get caught.

What exactly are you trying to achieve?

This place has changed.

Yes I broke the law, i would probably estimate most of the population do at some point every single day unless that have a driver monitoring box fitted or the few posters on here..

81 on a completely clear dual carriage way is in no way dangerous and that is the point I was making as others have. It's just a numbers game, no human element spring some common sense or monitoring driver confidence.

Anyway, I went over the limit, I was caught. Will leave it there.

Agree with you, OP. If it had been a decent (sensible) copper laying in wait behind the sign he would have either ignored your minor indescretion or would have stopped you and had a word.

My take on the annoyance is that these cameras are punted as Safety Cameras where in cases like this they are making no discernible contribution to safety but are excellent st collecting revenue. I would rather be punished for driving dangerously than just for driving fast.

The op would have been way more dangerous if he was drunk and stoned and weaving all over the road at 69mph but safe from about for £100

All police officers are civilians. So your comment was tautological.

We enjoy a civilian police service.

I can't believe some of the responses here. Yes he was over the arbitrary limit set when cars had drum brakes, no ABS and far worse handling than today..... but who here never speeds? And who actually agrees that the speed limits we have make any sense whatsoever?

I think the biggest conflict is that the roads that are probably the safest to drive fast when not busy - motorways and DCs - are restricted to 70mph at all times, regardless of conditions. But probably the most dangerous roads - unmarked narrow rural roads outside villages - can be NSL.

So on the one hand we are told we cannot judge for ourselves what speed is appropriate on a wide safe road with good visibility, electronic warnings signs of hazards, traffic all travelling in the same direction separated by barriers, and usually a better road surface.... but on a road which is nowhere near as straight, often worse visibility by a massive margin, often with points too narrow for two cars to pass, more hazards from things entering the carriageway (junctions, pedestrians, animals) and often a far worse road surface we are trusted to judge for ourselves an appropriate speed.

So which should it be?

I feel far more safe on the motorway over the speed limit when the traffic is clear enough than I do trying to get anywhere near the NSL on a lot of rural B roads which are NSL.

The big problem is idiots. The number of times you have idiots come clattering round a blind bend on rural roads straight towards you ably demonstrates that some people can't be trusted to judge how appropriate their own speed is.

When you put the combination of trying to curb the excess speed of idiots with kneejerk political reactions and a lazy/stupid government attitude to fixing the problem.... you end up with speed limits that often bear no resemblance to what is anticipated as a safe limit to most drivers, enforced for profit and political points.
