Why spend so much more on not a tvr?!

Look at this:

I do admire expensive cars but compare these and wonder why?

Ones built by Germans and perceived to be well built. The other by a couple of northern blokes and put together by hand and perceived as unreliable.
I doubt a Chimp would do 167 BTW and the Merc will be limited.

True, but is the merc 11 times better? I'm more on about look how good a car,one perceived in 1995 is,ok this is a 1998 example but is only 14k compared to a brand new car that offers only really a little more for 17th! In make you really appreciate what those northern blokes actually created 20+ years ago and a good one is still going strong and still delivers the performance today!

What's going on with the price tag at Fernhursts? Surely this car should be nearer 20k

The Merc will keep you warm and dry in the winter, it will be more reliable, it's new, it will have comfort features the Tvr can only dream of etc

The tvr would get you there and back perfectly fine. It's not driving them that they don't like. Keep it going and it'll get you there and back no problems!

A TVR is the best bang for the buck. If I had 15 times as much spare cash I might buy a McLaren, but nothing touches a TVR at the sub £20k budget.

So just to add some balance to the nonsense posted on here from time to time

12 years of TVR's - (all the history is on these forums, you can check back) - here is a list of major problems I have encounted

Chimaera - Seat belt retraction pulley spring failed (replaced for £15)
Griffith - Nothing
Cerbera - Battery, Alternator (both replaced myself)
Sagaris - Nothing

along with my

2.5 year old BMW 3 Series that I owned for 6 months - Air Con fan failed, sensor in exhaust failed (meaning it failed first MoT), Headlight washers failed.

Unfortunately the tvr has semi "press" performance figures which will require the press car and a test pilot. The sl65 will hit its figures all day long, and they will likely be conservative. Over 100 it'll urinate on most tvr's.

The majority of those Mercedes will be bought an run and run with no issues. There will always be an outlier case but however complicated you might think it is hardware and programming and durability has come on so far it's really no longer an issue.

To be fair my AMG Merc was a model of reliabilty - rust proofing was another story!! Its just seems to be BMW products that cause me issues as my Mini Cooper S Convertible hood broke!

Hey guys, this isn't a dig at the merc, just a bit of fun comparison of 14k tvr and 173k brand new merc! You are buying in both examples 2 seats sports cars with similar acceleration at least up to ns speeds and a little over, so both will offer just as much fun plus I think that the tvr would turn more heads. The sl65 is and amazing sl but to the average Joe on the street it's just another convertible merc. My 173k would go on a vanquish but that's just personal preference.

As you say the TVR would turn more heads in the general public but the '65' version has been around for a long time in the Merc, notably the CL65 since 2003. That car weighs 2155kgs and has claimed figures of 0-60 in 4.4 seconds, 60-100 in 4.5 and 0-100 in 8.9 secs. The quarter mile is 12.5 secs with a 5 speed automatic.
This old bus would give your TVR a run for its money!

But there isn't the drama, noise and sense of occasion the old school Brit provides
