I could really do with a bit of cheering up today. Anyone got back on the saddle after a heart attack? How long? How hard was it?

Yes. I had a heart attack on 11th January, had a stent fitted, four days in hospital, then home. Told to walk three to four gentle miles a day, which I did to start with but soon got bored,so out on the bike after two weeks.Just a gentle three to four miles. Was told by medics to avoid off road and steep hills but I live on top of a steep hill so that was tricky.I'm now doing 30-35 road miles on a Sunday plus 10-18 miles of mixed off road/road twice a week. I'm 62 in a couple of weeks, but did a lot of mountain biking, every Sunday at Cannock for the past 25 years,Morzine most years since '99,and I'm determined to carry on. Take it steady to start with, take your GTN spray and your phone with you and preferably not on your own, although I've done alot on my own, and don't worry,If you were basically cycling fit before you should still be.

If anyone out there didn't need a harder time of it!!

Hope you feel better soon, not sure on the cycling bit, but certainly there are people out there who've gone through it and are enjoying riding.

You have mail. I went through this a few years back.

(Are you also friends with PetrolTed on Facebook? - as I have just seen something similar posted there)

A colleague had a heart attack whilst riding last year. He has been training in very strict HR zones on the turbo throughout the winter and is now gradually increasing his road mileage, but all whilst staying in the lower zones. Obviously not the most fun in the world but you could liven it up with something like Zwift?

I don't mind that at all. I'm more than happy to kick out an hour on trainer road at lower power low heart rate. More than happy smile

Your beta blocker is going to be the big barrier to getting back to where you were - my initial dose capped my heart rate at around 130bpm, which is useless! We had to ramp it down significantly when my resting rate dropped to under 30, though.

I'm on 1.25mg bisoprolol now, the lowest dose they can give me. I still feel it 'caps' my rate too low.
