Occasionally cited that you never forget the moment certain famous people died.

Here are my 3, etched permanently in my neuronal network:

1. Princess Diana; working the night shift at a chocolate factory Saturday night/ Sunday morning, heard over the factory radio
2. Steve Irwin aka Crocodile Hunter; driving up the M6 on way to work on a Monday morning; heard on the radio
3. Michael Jackson; heard on the radio again, 22:00 evening show on radio 5 live

Who it be for you?

Gary Moore.

I was shown a video of him playing live when I was about 7 and became obsessed straight off.
His music has followed me throughout my life, I learned to play guitar by playing along with his albums.

I heard about his death on the breakfast news and it genuinely knocked me for six. I've been to his grave a few times.

Very much still got the blues.

That also applies to Marco Simoncelli.

Ditto.
Murray saying his head is moving when it dropped still haunts me.

Princess Diana, it happened the same day as the tipping tray got stuck on the sewage treatment plant.

JFK. Our form captain told us when he came back from an errand to the headmaster's office. Stunned silence from 30 12-year olds.

Mine are a bit unusual because they're not really ones that people got caught up in:

1) Rik Mayall. I genuinely felt like a bit of my youth died that day. Such an energetic performer and then nothing. Very sad.
2) Shoya Tomizawa: A 19-year old Moto2 rider who was killed in 2010 at San Marino. So desperately tragic to see a young talent scrubbed out.
3) Freddie Mercury: Ok, so I was only 11 at the time but parents were huge Queen fans and so I'd listened to them pretty much every day since birth.

John Lennon. After being fairly quiet for years he had been interviewed on radio 1 a few days before and sounded like he was back in business. Then one morning Dave Lee Travis referred to the news that 'John Lennon was killed in New York a few hours ago.'

Also Graham Hill for some reason. News of a light aircraft crashing near where I was living at the time and 'name withheld until next of kin has been informed' but a distinct impression it was already known who it was and it was someone prominent.

Diana was sad, but I remember my Dad getting annoyed at the saturation level media coverage, and getting annoyed that it was on non stop over 4 channels. Rik Mayall was a really sad one for me, since Bottom and Blackadder are some of the funniest tv shows ever, and Patrick Swayze as I saw a photo of him just before where he looked like a skeleton, really horrible decline. Pro wrestler Owen Hart was killed in front of a live audience when the harness that was supposed to be lowering him into the ring snapped, so one of the industry's few genuine nice guys suffered a pointless death for a silly gimmick. Then there was Chris Benoit, one of my favourites at the time who was found dead with his wife and son. The WWE made an emotional tribute show, only to then find out he killed them both before himself. He's since been erased from their history and his name has never been spoken on tv again.

Definitely Michael Jackson, it was the day I picked up my degree certificate and we were in a pub celebrating. Was a rather odd one as the screens (was a sports ish bar) showing the news, then the rest of the night the DJ just switched to playing the MJ hits (and lets face it - there's a fair few!) bar when some bint complain and was told where to go pretty quickly.

For me JFK, Jim Clark,Bruce McLaren,Gilles Villeneuve,Graham Hill,John Lennon and Ayton Senna. All violent deaths that seemed to etch in my mind. Plenty of others have passed away peacefully and for some reason that doesn't seem to register with me.

I was at Misano that day and was 250 yards away from the crash and witnessed it.
Didn't know how serious it was till I got home to England day or 2 later.
I saw it was bad .
