How noisey?

I have a mate who is going on his first trackday in his new ultima on saturday.The trackday is at bedford autodrome and they have told him it should be allright,but it seems a long way to go if he fails the noise meters.He has a 6.3 gtr,i guess standard cans.Sounds a lot louder than my tvr with sports cans so i think he'll have trouble.What options has he got?

Whats the db limit, if you seach on db here most on std cans are about 105dbs IIRC

They are really hot on noise at Bedford and I would be suprised if you meet static and driveby. There has been lots of posts about noise at Bedford on various forums.

Try PH Trackday forum and the Scoobynet forum - this one even had JP taking part on the topic.

Noise limits are 101db's static at 2 thirds of your maximum revs at a half a metre's distance.

Bedford say: At Bedford Autodrome we have two noise tests. First your car will be subjected to a static test, in which the noise level is measured 50cm away from your exhaust pipe with the engine at 75% of maximum rpm. The reading must not exceed 101 dB(A).

I got on at bedfored with my modded exhaust... just.
They measured another Ultima with the std exhaust and that came in at 108db which was what mine was with the std exhaust.

Yup, Bedford is VERY hot on noise, just like Goodwood. They have a limit of 98DB. What makes me laugh though is they reckon their FPA single seaters are 98Db.....yeh right. More like 108 when I was last at Brands with them.

noise limit at bedford when I went was 101db not sure if they have varying limits for different days... mine was an afternoon evening/event and it was a very good event.

Bedford noise limits discussed today on the GT3 Titanic mail list following a few black flags apparently on Saturday. Limits are 101dB static and 87dB drive by.

I really can't see an Ultima in anything like standard trim making those limits.

Hi guys,i don't know what was going on but we we're let on and run all day.As we went in we we're told it was to loud and they'd see how it went on the drive by.Didn't get any trouble all day.
There was another ultima there that was trying to be quite,to no avail as his mufflers kept falling off and ended up getting black flagged and sent home.I think his was putting out 600+hp.
A lot of the other stuff seemed a lot louder still and didn't get any trouble.

I saw some pics from Bedford Saturday and it looked like my old GTR was there - red with some Pistonheads.com stickers on it.

I was a passenger in it.Graham the guy you sold it to was getting to grips with it.Very impressive it was too.You did a great job on that.
How's your knew car,a bit more relaxing to drive i'd guess?

Yes, a few more creature comforts, although in many ways it's just as mad to drive A flat six at 8k rpm is about as addictive a noise as the V8

It was strange,they told him it was to loud but let him in any way and had no trouble all day!
He learnt a lot about the handling but still got a few more years tracking it before he can get the best out of it i guess.He's had to change his driving style a bit.The instructor took it out and was well impressed with the car.He made it look to easy.
And i agree the flat six flat out does sound pretty good too.I saw a couple of gt3's going round the track,normally just the back end as they flash by!Very cool cars.

Being cheeky, you can have any car noise tested whether it's going on the circuit or not... Not saying I've done this but once the car passes it gets a sticker.... Peel off one and put on the other!

Yeah, but the point is that 3 of the GT3 guys at Bedford on Sat passed the static test fine but were later black flagged for breaking the limits on the drive by meters. One managed OK for a while as he worked out where the drive by ones were and short shifted past them, but they later brought in a mobile one which he apparently passed at 99dbA
