Camping at a race weekend this weekend, and after ideas for stuff that's quick and easy to cook on a single camping stove, using ingredients that don't need to be kept that cool.

My usual staples are:
- Fried egg and chorizo in a roll
- Porridge pots
- Chorizo, mushrooms and couscous
- Tinned chilli and boil in the bag rice


Any other suggestions? Key criteria are no refrigeration (there for 2 days and it might be fairly warm), and quick to prepare/cook (only going have 5 to 7 hours between races and need to fit some sleep in too).

Just got back from camping over the weekend and the following went down very well indeed:

Make a fairly sizeable square of tin foil and add:

- Sweet Potato
- Onion
- Garlic
- Broccoli
- Runner Beans

Season with:

- Olive Oil
- Worcestershire Sauce
- Salt & Pepper


Leave cooking for 30 mins.

Google 'hobo dinner' for more ideas.

Grated spud to make frying-pan rosti. Nice tinned soup and crusty bread.

Tortilla wraps with a tin of tomatoes and some cheese make a great frying pan pizza.

Those Aldi packet risottos are amazing for what they are, and dead easy on a one-pot camping stove.

Frozen burgers, steaks, chops and sausages will be fine in a well-packed and well-discipled (!) coolbox over 2 days.

But you know the answer: Beans on toast is camping gold.

Unfortunately won't have a camp fire, and I don't really fancy cooking toast on my petrol stove biggrin

Some cracking ideas there, but I guess that works best with a camp fire or BBQ rather than a stove.

That's exactly what I did last year, and agree a tinned chilli will taste nowhere near as good, but I won't get home until about 10pm on Friday and need to set off about 8am on Sunday, so it's going to be down to what I can grab in Sainsbury's on Saturday morning.

Make work a game (like Mary Poppins taught us) and do the Pepsi Challenge between Stag Medium Chilli and Winalot Prime Chunks.

NOT easy, and great fun for all the family.

Pasta pesto and parmesan, their are some fresh stuffed pastas that don't need to be chilled, ive not tried them though. You could add a tin of tuna.

Straight to wok noodles and tinned stir fry veg (or frozen, its not meat so it will be ok for a couple of days), add an egg near the end of cooking and scramble it, add a sauce too it or soy sauce.
Tinned Soup
Steak (take it frozen, have it on the day its defrosted), Saute potato, beans and an egg.

Pre-preparing stuff and taking it will its frozen usually works a treat.


Sainsburys have some nice packets of meals, in the grocery aisle, black packets, cant find them on the website..

We were camping last weekend. We have a decent coolbox with us and can make that last the two days. We only have one burner, one of those cased butane ones.

Day 1 - we usually get some of the stuffed pasta packets from the supermarket and lob in a sauce, homemade and taken with us if we remember, packet if not. Have also done it with just chucking in some frozen peas (from the cool box, helps keep it cool), pesto and some grated cheese.

This time on Friday I did a sort of hash, so some sausages chopped up, fried with some onion, bit of red pepper and some new potatoes (I cheated and cooked these at home first). Threw in a couple of beaten eggs at the end.

Dinner day 2 - we make something and freeze it before we go. This helps keep the coolbox cold, and it defrosts slowly in there so by the time you need it it's defrosted, this time we took a chilli. We took some yoghurt, cheeese, guacamole and some flour tortillas and a bit of salad.

Other times, we've taken a sausage stew for day 2, essentially anything that is fairly self contained and doesn't need two burners (as we don't have one!)

Other things I've considered would be a stir fry using straight to wok noodles, or some kind of thai veg curry wouldn't be that hard if you based it on noodles, coconut milk and the like (that's next time for me then!)

I don't like having raw meat in the coolbox for too long as it never really keeps it cold enough, so try and use it up early!

We buy a stash of these from the Supermarket. Surprisingly good. Heat the bag in some hot water.

The 'look what we found' range is good and takes a few mins to heat up on the hob. Likewise the microwaveable rice - can be stir fried on the hob with some oil for a few mins. Naan bread can also be pan fried for the curries.
Jar of hot dogs, can of baked beans. Instant potato mash or tin of new potatoes.
Tinned chicken in white wine sauce is good with a packet of rice.
There's plenty of ready tinned meals to try. Chilli,curry and stew are all good. The big soups are good too. I quite like clam chowder and add an extra tin of clams to make it more substantial. Similarly lobster bisque with added tin of lobster meat to it.
Eggs are good, easy omelette. Mushrooms good to add as well.

I've not see the "Look What We Found" stuff before, that looks pretty good

On a gas burner, but I wouldn't want to try it on my petrol one. I remember a lad at school cooking toast on a Hexamine stove, he was a bit ill afterwards.

Camping should never, ever involve mushrooms and couscous laugh

What’s wrong with a cool box, some burgers and sausages, bread rolls and if you want to be really fancy, tinned beans or macaroni cheese?

the sausages and burgers can be done on a bbq, even a disposable one if you must, or a frying pan on the stove.

Most of my camping is done by motorbike, so couscous works well as it takes up very little space and lasts ages, and there are few culinary experiences that won't be enhanced by the addition of mushrooms biggrin

Sausages and burgers are fine on a BBQ, but take way too long in a frying pan on a camping stove. Disposable BBQ or a small portable one are fine if you're cooking for a group in the evening but we're all going to be eating separately and fairly quickly due to the race timings (it's a relay race).

That look what we found range seems ideal. I'm camping at Silverstone this weekend, and Le Mans the one after. They look a much better option than merguez sausage.

That's a good point, the standard Squaddie trick of always carrying a small bottle of tabasco or similar.
