I heard something today near Ripon about 5pm, very loud, sounded low and slow and jet-like. Reminiscent of the Vulcan but more rumbly........

Might have been the B-1 Lancer I saw over Ely today, that was about 5:30pm. Probably heading to one of the airbases nearby.

I was so surprised I nearly came off my bike.
We see and (mostly) hear a fair amount of military aeroplanes and helicopters around here what with Lakenheath and Mildenhall, but that's the first truly awesome plane I've seen since living here.

(Sorry they're terrible)

I completely didn't recognise it as a B1, as all the photos I've ever seen have been with the wings swept back. It's surprisingly long and lean with the wings outstretched! I thought it was a drone.

It's been an amazing month for viewing stuff if you're anyway near milldenheath smile

I could well be wrong - I only saw it for a bit as it passed overhead in Ely. Though it didn't seem all that small.
My immediate thought was "bloody hell that's a Rockwell B1 bomber", followed by "st, best not hit the curb".

I think you're absolutely correct that it was a B1, id just never seen one with the wings out before, and I'd always thought they'd be larger than that.

For such a rare sight it was brazenly just mosying along - like a lion swaggering across the savannah smile

You should've been round here in the 1980s! I remember Blackbird coming in low over our primary school playing field on approach to Lakenheath.

Later in the 1990s the Stealth fighter would often come in, usually early evening and right over our house smile

Rumour was a det of B1's were going to join the det of 3 x B-52 that arrived last week at Fairford for an exercise, so maybe true, and it will be off to Fairford soon?

I remember being at Wicken Fen about 10 years ago, seeing a B-2 quite low overhead.

It made an amazing racket, considering it's supposed to be "Stealth"...

Yeah, that'd be something that would stick in the mind! I'd love to have seen Blackbird flying.

So did anyone else see the B-52s this afternoon? They were comparatively high up and were covering ground pretty quickly.

I stood right at the end of the runway at Lakenheath a couple of times when the blackbird landed.
It was something special having it fly over your head at about 70/80 feet, then having the heat blast hit you!

I've got a memory from the early nineties, probably during the Balkans Conflict, of living at Brize Norton and being able to hear the B1's taking off from Upper Hayford. You'd hear low rumbling for a while as the aircraft took off and presumably flew south near Brize. Looking at the map now Upper Hayford seems quite a long way away to be hearing them taking off, but that distinct rumbling and my dad telling me it was the B1's has stuck in my mind...

Upper Heyford closed in 1993 after the last F-111's left, and the B-1B was first used in the Balkans in 1999, and they flew from Fairford??

So, it might have been earlier, during the Gulf War in '91 when the F-111's were flying from Upper Heyford?
