I have a tax free car and the road tax renewal arrived today for tax due from 1st July. Tried to renew - but as MOT expires on 29th June I can't (on line or in post office) as the MOT needs to be valid from start date of tax.

I wonder if I could shift my tax renewal to 1st June by SORN'ing now (car is off road in my garage and isn't going anywhere until weekend at earliest) and then renewing in June.

I have the tax reminder - so does anyone know I use this to SORN now, can I then use the same reminder to immediately (or in a few days) to take it off SORN and apply for TAX - this time eligible from June 1st which would then work as my MOT is valid until end May etc .

Thanks in advance,

Yep, you can.

It might not let you tax online within a day or three of the SORN, and you'll need to use the V5C docref rather than the V11 reminder number to re-tax it, but it'd certainly work.

Or you could just re-MOT it next week, then before the tax renewal date next year.

No.

Let's say you SORN it today, because your insurance expires tomorrow.

If it stayed taxed until the end of the month, you'd spend three weeks breaking the continuous insurance law.

Agree that getting it MOT'd is the logical answer - but I am away from home during the week so its not as simple as a few clicks on the internet. If it works then having the tax expire the month before the MOT every year would be a bonus and given I now pay nothing for tax as car is on historic status it seemed an option to consider.
