Sheer number of drivers uses their smartphones on m'way's
Discussion
Having spent the past weekend bumbling from one end of the country to the other & back in the motorhome, which has a rather good view of other road users & oh my god.
I would say about 20% yes 1 in 5 drivers are actually not looking where they are going, instead typically looking down into their devices. I started to count & gave up at 100 plus in the space of 20mins when passing Birmingham.
It was noticeably worse around the cities, but seriously the figure was frightening. Some are typically so obvious to spot, wandering about as they do. Following the container lorry using three lanes was the worst though!
Sod the bloody speed cameras & the pissy fines for phone use, its time to do some policing & issue some instant bans for DD & DWDC it would empty the motorway network & free up our roads too.
Bring on a license cull is all I can say

What is infuriating is that it costs peanuts to have a hands free. I've got a device that I clip onto my seatbelt. It cost under £10 in 2013, goes from car to car with no problem. I bought a cheap one to see how I got on with it and it has been perfect. Yet people risk injury, accident and a hefty fine if caught. Not only that, they risk hitting my car.
Talking on hands free is not the real issue. Texting, Facebook, Twitter are the biggest danger, this is what needs clamping down on, I see it daily, many times, young women are the worst culprits.
It's easy to spot them, usually driving too slowly, dabbing brakes lights, weaving in lanes, head bobbing up and down. Not pulling away on a green light because they're 'checking there bloody status'!!

As well as the fines and points seize the phone and destroy it ,inform the network and block the individual from sevice for a year .
Sounds like you would like to bring back hanging for such serious offences.Seriously the problem IMO is not the penalties but the minimal chance of being caught.
The amount of people who drive past my house when on the phone is insane too. If I sit in the office or our bedroom, I have a nice raised view of the road. Being into cars, I sometimes sit and see what drives past. I will often see cars go by with the driver either looking down at a phone, or even balancing it in the centre of the steering wheel.
It's bad enough that hardly anyone drives at the 30 mph speed limit, let alone doing so whilst on the phone. Absolute f
king idiots.
As mentioned above, women seem to be the worst culprits. I thought they were the safer gender though.

Harsh but having a blocking the phones internet and text ability for 2 weeks would be a suitable additional punishment to points and a fine. Also perhaps all these speed cameras could also detect people using phones.

Not condoning the use of mobiles, which is completely unnecessary these days but what also worries me is the sort who bumble around the country watching what others are doing rather than paying attention to what they are up to.........
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed the irony

I don't think people are looking out for out for these d1ckh3ads, it's the wandering all over the road doing 40 mph that gives away the lack of concentration. You tend to look at the driver when going past and low and behold they are staring at the poxy phone.

Applies to pretty much any road traffic offence though to be honest, including more sympathetic (on here at least) ones like speeding. Doubt people would be in favour of vastly more Police on the roads - even if there were the budgets for it - because of the risks of something that they are doing wrong being spotted and dealt with.

You spotted someone on thier phone every 12 seconds for 20 minutes?I would say about 20% yes 1 in 5 drivers are actually not looking where they are going, instead typically looking down into their devices. I started to count & gave up at 100 plus in the space of 20mins when passing Birmingham.

How much time were you spending focusing on where you were going rather than watching what everyone else was doing?
