Low Temp Thermostat
Discussion
Hello all
I'm about to purchase my 2nd Porsche 997. I'm buying it from a colleague as his OPC warranty has ended and he's buying a new Boxster.
The car went on a trip to Monaco and it used 0.4l of oil which my OPC dealer said is to be expected after a service. The left exhaust pipe is not heavily sooted like some that I've seen but there is some light dusty soot that can be wiped away with tissue.
I was going to have an LTT fitted to help with cooling. My question is, if the engine already has light scoring I'm assuming the LTT will prevent it from getting worse? or is the damage already done and will need a rebuild regardless?

I had a 55 plate 997 C2S with around 50k miles on the clock and it used very little oil. I did one organised driving holiday and covered over 2000 miles in a week, many of which were at relatively high revs with fairly hard driving. That said, the oil usage figures that are in the manual do indicate a higher amount than you have actually experienced, so in the words of the OPC 'this is perfectly normal Sir'
I had the lower opening thermostat fitted when I got the car with under 40k of the clock and at the risk of opening a debate on what many believe will be the inevitable bore scoring on the 3.8 engine, I would suggest that for the relatively low cost of having this done......for me it's a no brainer and it was definitely noticeable that the oil temperature was consistently lower after I had it fitted, without any longer warmer up times or higher fuel consumption

Do you mind if I ask where and how much, and how long to fit?I had the lower opening thermostat fitted when I got the car with under 40k of the clock and at the risk of opening a debate on what many believe will be the inevitable bore scoring on the 3.8 engine, I would suggest that for the relatively low cost of having this done......for me it's a no brainer and it was definitely noticeable that the oil temperature was consistently lower after I had it fitted, without any longer warmer up times or higher fuel consumption

Thanks, I am going to have it fitted anyway, I was just interested what the outcome would be if an engine contained light scoring already and then you fitted an LTT.I had the lower opening thermostat fitted when I got the car with under 40k of the clock and at the risk of opening a debate on what many believe will be the inevitable bore scoring on the 3.8 engine, I would suggest that for the relatively low cost of having this done......for me it's a no brainer and it was definitely noticeable that the oil temperature was consistently lower after I had it fitted, without any longer warmer up times or higher fuel consumption
It was about 3 years back when I had it done. Dove House did it for me. From memory they got the thermostat in from Hartech. I seemed to remember it costing around £130.00 all in, but It may have been a bit more as I haven't got the receipts with me.
They re-used the coolant and just topped up after.
I don't know where you are located, but Tony and his team are excellent and would certainly look after you.
They have a nice coffee machine as well!!

Sorry.....forgot about timing. I had a couple of things done at the same time and waited there for the car maybe three hours in total. They used to charge (and probably still do) around £60.00 per hour, so I'm guessing maybe 1.5hrs chargeable.
Thanks, I've been quoted something similar!Porsche have indeed extended to 15 years, a friend was going to put his 996TT through, on a 03 plate, and I was going to get my 52 plate 996 on there, but it had the LN bearing and M030 after factory so it was a no no... Speak to your local OPC.
It will require a 111 point check (111 I think from memory) and then any issues rectified before being allowed on the warranty. Following this you'll either have 6m or 12m warranty packages at X price.
