Hi All (also posted in general gassing),

Seriously considering either a Gen 2 Boxster or Cayman as my next car, but I have a bit of an issue - my height.

At 6ft 6 I can get in a gen 2, but my right hand hits my right knee when I turn the steering wheel. It is slight contact, but nontheless there. The other issue is if I'll have enough room to take my left foot off the clutch in a manual (I sat in a pdk, so no issue with that). Also, I'm unsure if either car would be comfortable on runs longer than an hour or 2.

As it's highly unlikely I'd get an extended (24/48hr) test drive from a dealer (I'm looking at used, around the 25k mark) I thought it might be good to try and find a place to hire one for a day or two. Any suggestions or recommended places, ideally in or around Surrey / Kent or London?

Thanks

tjlees

Thanks for the links, but they seem to be for the later version of the boxster - I need a 987, as that's the one I'm looking at...

Mate, I am 6ft 2"....so a midget against you, but I found the 987 a bit of a squeeze....and had back ache for the first 5K of ownership.

Strangely, my body seemed to adapt to it and I went on to cover 90K in my 987 Boxster...followed by 85K in my 987 gen 2 Cayman!!

They both had standard seats....I may be wrong, but think the Sports Seats will probably eat away more legroom, so consider that when making your choice.

I now have a 981 which offers plenty of space....but that doesn't really help you, does it!!!

Although not a Gen 2 maybe this Cayman for hire would be of interest....... http://www.newforestsportscarhire.co.uk/#!porsche-...

I'm 6' 1" and tried a few 987 GenII models but the lack of cabin height was one of the major reasons I didn't buy one.

My 6' 5" son fits comfortably into his 2010 Mini Cooper, but would struggle with my 981 Cayman.

I'm a massive 5'8, and find that my sports seats are pretty much as far back as I can go, so much so that they squeak on plastic behind.

Thanks for the link to the gen 1 cayman. I assume that the gen 1 and 2 are identical in terms of cabin space / pedal spacings etc?

It does seem from the comments that fitting in might be more of a task than previously thought - which is a shame. I don't have the budget for a 981 and a older 997 (which I do fit in) has well known and discussed reliability issues.

If you couldn't have / fit in a gen 2 - what would you have instead?

Hi,

Not an answer to your original question ... But some personal experience from a fellow tall guy..

I'm 6ft 5" and have a 987 Gen II Boxster S PDK and find it very comfortable for long runs ( Spent 4 hours in the car last weekend with Breakfast club and Simply Porsche events ) etc... And still have head space...

I guess a lot will depend on your legs vs. Body length ( I'm about 50%/50% )

The footrest as your mentioned does help a lot with the PDK ( one of the many reasons I chose PDK vs Manual )

I had some back ache initially but fiddled with the angle of the seat slightly and all of my problems went away

Hope this helps

Thanks for the info Paul, good to know it's not too small a car for us taller folk!

Will have to step up the search to find suitable candidates to test drive. Any other known hire car options for the 987?

How about a 997 3.6 gen 1 ? From what I've read, these don't seem to have the issues of a 3.8s....not sure if they fit with your budget, but I would consider one of these.
