I did exactly that - chucked in my 987 2.9 gen 2 for a 2.7 981c when they first came out.

Loved my 2.9....but love my 981 more. I am 6ft 2" so fit in the 981 so much better. Just love the styling.....for me the best looking car Porsche make. The 2.7 engine sounds nicer too.

The harder decision will be do I move to a 718.......hmmmmmmm.

That's easy. The answer is "no" biggrin

(Obviously this is dependent upon how much you love an NA flat six...)

Would you not try for an "S" while making the change?

Fair enough - in most everyday driving there's not a lot of real world difference. Either way you'll be in one of the best sportscars available!

The R is not a 981, it's a dated looking 987.

The OP is asking about moving from a 987 to a 981, not moving between 987 models or buying a 718.

It's a win win.

No need to say the 987 is a st outdated car was there ?

No need for you to bang on about your perceived lousy steering on the 981 every time you get the chance, but you do!

I tried a 981 2.7 Boxster the other day when my 2.9 Cayman was in. It’s a much better looking car and is certainly a lot more modern inside. With PSE, it did sound fantastic roof down and I really enjoyed having it for the day. The electronic steering was better than I was expecting based on comments on PH, but the car didn’t feel quite as quick as my Cayman. The PDK was interesting but ultimately didn’t like it as there were a few occasions it found itself in the wrong gear. The ride was much better, even with PASM switched on it felt much more comfortable with 20” wheels then mine did on 19’s.

I will definitely consider a move to a 981 in the future, but would have to go for an S (or GTS).

I've never noticed anything particularly bad about the steering.

When I first had my 981c, I hated the electric handbrake......but only just remembered that a few moments ago - don't even think about it now.

To me, the 981 is the perfect size...the 987 always felt slightly too small.

No one has mentioned an extended test drive to see if you actually like the 981! We all have different opinions but I am an in the keep what you have camp but then I am not a fan of the 981 including the looks and if it wasn't for the gt4 in the model range which I own I would rather a 987.2!

I very much like the look of the 981, in fact I prefer it to the 987. Unfortunately it doesn't live up to its looks imo when compaired to the 987. I found it to be less involving, and although I recorded higher speeds over regularly driven roads, the 981 actually felt slower as a result of its additional refinement. The GTS I drove was better than the S, although it did have optional sports suspension, and would probably be the only one apart from a GT4 that would tempt me out of my 987 CS.

I find myself stabbing at the lower right hand dash in my wife's Audi, trying to put the handbrake on!

Yes I agree, why would you buy one if you didn't like the way it looks?

I chose the 2.7 981 over the S for more involvement. The S seemed to laid back and dozy to be entertaining on today's roads. A GTS would no doubt be even more of a problem to have fun in without losing your license.

Having had both (currently GTS) in my opinion the 981 is superior in every way except for steering feel, to be honest it's fine for general driving but pretty disappointing when getting a wiggle on feeling vague & lacking in feedback.

Other than that & maybe a wish for a more solid brake pedal it's a first class car.
