Mercedes 190d 2.5 auto

Always loved my older cars, Volvo and Mercedes particularly. Saw this little gem for sale in 2011 and missed it, couldn't believe when it popped back for sale last week.
1992 mercedes 190d 2.5 auto. Well specced (for one of these when a radio was an option). with temp gauge, rear headrests, 4 electric windows and sunroof.
It is literally like new, battery tray, rubbers, arches, door cards, boot floor, everything. 74k with a massive history folder with 17 dealer stamps. Has that german smell, must be in the glue they use. Smells the same as my old e30 used to.
Beautiful to drive, not fast but once up to speed it will hold it's own and is very refined even at above motorway speeds with a nice 5 cylinder thrum. There was a slight rush on to make the 4.30 ferry but drove up from yorkshire without fault.
Jobs to do? Can't think of anything other than keep it in the manor to which it is accustomed.
With this, a 55k volvo 740 and a 66k toyota carina e i'm slowly building the most reliable fleet on the planet.

Really nice car. I saw it for sale (it's the MTSV car, yes?) and thought it the best I'd seen in a while. How did you find Mark to deal with?
What are the noise levels like?
How is the fuel economy?
What sort of speed is it happiest sitting at?
I've spent many an hour thinking that a car like this is what I really need!

Mark is a gent. Everything was as described and I was sorry I didn't leave myself time to look round his garage properly.
It's noisy at idle but when moving its quiet, even at higher speeds. 70 is 3k ish, 80-85 is its natural gate but still plenty of pull left. Seems to accelerate the same up there as it does from 30 up.
Not sure on economy yet, 240 mile trip home used just about half a tank, I was rarely under 70.

I have fond memories of my manual 1989 190e 2.0 that I bought back in 1997. Build quality was just fantastic, but I foolishly sold it to get a W202 C280 Sport - the only thing better about it was it was quicker!
Back in the 90s a motor trader mate of mine had an automatic 190d 2.0 that we took round the M25 and down to Lydden Hill to see some Rallycross - it cruised fine at 80/85 but took forever to get there!
He said it was the only car he had owned that scared him trying to join a roundabout as it was so slow!
Hopefully the 2.5 is a bit less lethargic!

My s124 diesel is the same: it takes as long to do 30 to 50 as 60 to 80, or so it seems. Not sure on economy yet, 240 mile trip home used just about half a tank, I was rarely under 70.
I put a long range fuel tank in my 190, giving 70L capacity against the standard 55L. This was an easy and worthwhile modification, although finding the tank took a while.
