Hi guys, if anyone knows or has any experience of this please let me know, as I'm bricking it 😬

Due to a small spate of unemployment, and generally struggling with money, I couldn't afford to pay for the word required (shattered handbrake shoes) to get my car through an MOT, thus couldn't re-tax the vehicle. So this had lasted for about 3 months, and I was zapped by a DVLA check camera car. The letter only came through on Thursday, and I only opened it on Sunday. It said that I had been fined £120, to be paid by the 15th (that Sunday). So, obviously i didn't pay because I only knew of it on the deadline day.

My question guys is, what is the next step, as I heard you can be fined £1000, and that would suck. I tried all day to call the DVLA to try and explain, but they had the "we are too busy" voicemail on that just hangs up on you. I am wondering if they will be lenient on the deadline as I could pay the £120 now.

Cheers guys

So you were fully aware your car was not taxed but you chose to drive it on the road?

What, exactly, were "you going to explain"?

"Bang to rights" I think is the phrase.

Whilst this does sound like the latest in the recent series of wind up posts, I'll try and give my opinion anyway..

It might sound harsh, but it's not their problem, and you should know better.

Ask a family member/friend to lend you the cash, or failing that, declare yourself bankrupt i guess.

You're not going to get much sympathy here. I presume all the events were last month as the 15th May was a Sunday.

The handbrake is a safety issue. It is meant to be able to stop the car in a straight line if the regular brakes fail. So it could be argued you were driving a dangerous car too. DVLC didn't know that, but you've just admitted it on an open forum.

Had you rung them, on Monday 16th May, and been able to pay then, you might have got away with only paying the £120 + the back tax. However, it is now quarter to 11 on the 7th June, 17 working days since.

I rather doubt they be seeking £1000 yet - but they could.

So you opened it on Sunday and had until the end of Sunday to pay it, why didn't you?

Has it got an MOT yet?

Point of order, Sir.

It had no MOT or tax, and faulty brakes.

Have you ever been really broke, to the point where you almost can't function and our wonderful benefit system does nothing to help because you're not a vagrant/drug addict/immigrant, take your pick.

Try it some time and it'll change your point of view, and just might stop you being such an offensive smart ass.

Yes. I didn't knowingly drive a car around in that state though.

All you can do is keep trying to contact them, grovel and hopefully they'll give you the option of paying the original £120 fine.

I shouldn't say this but I can't help myself, but getting caught driving around in a car with no MOT or tax for 3 months, then ignoring the letter from the DVLA (or whatever they're called these days) is not the fault of the benefits system, or immigrants, or drug addicts.

Yes, I was once so broke I couldn't afford to run my car legally, so I had to stop driving until I could.

Same here. I begged lifts off people, rode a bike, and even (and I'm ashamed to say this) walked. Bonkers

s? Really? For daring to point out that they stick to the basic rules? It's barely sanctimonious.

I'd like to know three things,

1. how did he manage to find the money to stick fuel in the car for three months, whilst not being able to afford to tax it? Bear in mind that if he's paying the top rate of tax, then he'll have to find a lot of money for the gas guzzler that he drives, the opposite applies too. In both cases he's not in a great position

2. How would you feel if his brakes failed and hit your precious car? Of course his insurance should pay out in time, but it's still damage to your car, that (like every single PHer) is both immaculate and the best example of its kind in the who,e of the U.K.

3. Why is it different when a PHer doesn't pay his way? Many are up in arms about those not paying for MOT or tax when a PHer is a victim of this.
