Hi All

Apologies in advance if this has already been covered... I did have a search but couldn't find anything.

Air con has stopped working on my Mk5 GTI. I had it looked at in October at a dealer when it was serviced and there are no leaks in the system. I was thinking of a re-gas, but then if it's something else I don't want to throw money at it for no reason.

I did Google and it seems compressors go on Mk5 Golfs - would you agree?

Currently in 2 minds as to whether to take it to the dealer for diagnosis or whether to get someone like http://www.wechillanycar.com/ round.

Help/thoughts/guidance greatly appreciated!!

I believe it's common for the condenser units to fail completely on these. Not sure how much they are but a quick google search should set you right.

Both my Volvo and my wife's Mk6 Golf have had condensors fail in the last year. Both were undetected by a leak test.

mk 5 golfs have a bit of a reputation for air con leaks. This will stop the compressor from working, as the pressure in the system pressure drops.
check for leaks first - new compressors are expensive
i had the same problem with my golf - took it to halfords for a regas, which fixed it temporarily. however after a bit of investigation, leak was diagnosed, and part replaced.

It could be the pressure sensor too... very common to fail

You really get it scanned to see what fault codes are stored

I had problems with mine and found it difficult to diagnose, trouble is finding a good specialist who actually knows what they are doing. Seems a common problem on these but multiple fixes.

Tried the regas initially, then swapped the pressure sensor and finally gave in and paid for a new compressor. However after all that it still wasn't 100%

I think the new owner ended up having to replace the compressor again to get it working
