Hi All

Looking at an S5 V8, must be manual and around 60k miles.

I do a nursery run twice a week and would like my son to sit in the front - about 2 miles each way traveling under 30 mph.

Do all S5's have a passenger side air bag deactivation switch?

Do all passenger side front seats have isofix?

Does this car look lowered?

Thanks

Car in question attached

No direct experience of the S5 but have had two A6s and currently an S6 and they have all had isofix in the front and passenger air bag deactivation so I suspect those things are standard across the range.

One thing I find through is the bucket type seats on the S are quite narrow and getting a child seat in isn't always easy without it resting on the bolsters and marking them. I bought a mat to go underneath the seat to protect the leather.

Ride height looks normal - concur with the answers above on Isofix provision and seat shape (although it depends a lot on the specific child seat and Isofix ones are generally taller and fit better in a bucket seat than non-Isofix)

As above re seats etc.

If you are looking at a manual check the service history to see if it has had the clutch throw out bearing changed. Major issue on the S5 as I experienced personally.

Good luck as its a pretty decent car all said.

Slight thread hi-jack, but is it going to be really difficult to fit a rear facing child seat in the back of an S5?

I'm so tempted by one, I'm not keen on the running costs, but I don't do that many miles. I do however need to transport my son quite often despite having a "family" car.

Friend currently has one and has issues with the engine coked up, his is on 40k and full service history, put on rolling road and it made only 290bhp due to the engine being coked up, only way to sort it, strip it down and get it cleaned out by hand ideally, otherwise stunning car and sound insane

Dont think so, I thought they were quite good space wise seeing as its a coupe?

running costs arent too bad. sold mine in Jan and had done 16 k in a year in it.

24mpg overall

got 30mpg on the motorways at 70.

Get one you will enjoy it I am sure, the noise is lovely.

^ Only a year of ownership though? There maybe one of these coming up for sale at work soon (work coleage selling) manual with 85k miles in black with some nice options. Risky mileage?

We ruled a coupe out when we were looking at one as family transport - the front seat doesn't move that far forward so it's quite a climb to access the back seat. Getting a rear facing infant carrier onto an Isofix base is probably do-able but a larger rear facing seat will be ridiculously hard work as you'll be climbing in the back every time to do harnesses up. Bare in mind for any access at all the door will need to be fairly wide open too

We bought an S5 Sportback which shares its wheelbase with the S4 and is much more spacious as usable family wheels

We've had ours for three years - same as above on seats/airbags. That car isn't lowered.

We've never had the "coke" issue, but we did have the clutch problem. They are expensive to sort, so check history. Also:

Coolant bottles crack - hard to notice due to temps, but at least the car will moan about it.
Window electrics/motors on earlier cars have a design fault (or feature!) and can fail, as can door lock modules.
Thermostats/water pumps can be problematic. We've had one go, and were told the "new" one might be leaking (it isn't, but a search brought up model failures)

Other than that, a good 22mpg average from 20 mile commutes on A/B roads. It's never actually let us down, just the complexities of such a car being what it is. Brakes are due now... never ends wink Personally, I love it, but it's my Wife's car and she wants an S3 Saloon now as the V8 is starting to wear on her bank balance.

Thanks for the replies guys

Yes heard about the coke issue, same on all FSI engines and I think with more specialists offering the service, prices will come down.

Anything from by hand to chemicals ranging from £100 - £2k depending on method.

Didn't know about the clutch bearing, thanks. Looking at manuals only so will check this.

Cheers

I've been running one on the side for the past 3-months/ 1800 miles. It's a great fun and awesome sounding car! Handles like its on rails with the Quattro. Perhaps a little heavy to really enjoy on short journeys but seriously entertaining on the back roads.

I've averaged about 22mpg overall and you can just about nudge 30mpg on a long run. Practicality isn't its forte so it's best considered a 2-seater with the back seats really for occasional use only. Running costs are high but not crazy, certainly some way of what you'd pay for an RS/ R8.

That seems very common on the B7 RS4 but isn't heard of that much on the S5. Also some people on the Audi forums have had good results just from a £100 carbon clean - http://www.enginecarbonclean.com/

I'm not so sure about the running costs. I ran an RS5 for 2 years. Service from an Audi dealer was about £300 supplying own oil, tyres are no more expensive, fuel economy about the same, insurance was very cheap given I was in my 20's. If something goes wrong it could get pricey but insured warranties are available for fairly sensible sums.

Either way though lovely car, beautiful sound.

I had a 2008 coupe up until the start of 2015 and used it as a daily for my 50mil commute and child transport morning and night.

Depending on the car seat it'll fit snuggly in between the seat bolsters - I had a recaro young sport that fitted well in the front passenger seat. I didn't find that it misshaped the seat and I used a seat protector underneath.

Had the car for around 4years with the following options nav, heated seats, memory seats, rear camera, cruise, B&O, swivel headlights, DAB. It was a well spec'd car and I used all the options. I bought the car approved used at circa 3yrs old. I had the LED tail lights retro fitted as part of my deal to give it a fresher look. It was phantom black with black interior.

Running costs are reasonable, 300 miles to a tank of petrol with predominately motorway with small amount of B roads. Major service (oil, filters, spark plugs) £375 iirc, I was around 12/14k miles per service.

Tyres lasted 25/30k miles, brakes were similar (pads) discs needed changed around 60k I think.

I always had a warranty on the car, official Audi, from buying as an used approved to then extending this at around £1k per year. It paid for itself and more as I had 2 new B&O amsp (£1k fitted each), small niggles such as a door handle fail, exhaust recir valve that flag an EML every so often, rear park sensor fail, airbag ecu fail and a few other minor ones.

Performance it wasn't slow and had the noise to go with it, it's not a M3 or RS but it's not meant to be. I had plenty of fun especially with it being quattro. Not many things got away from it and it surprises a lot of other cars as it looks pretty subtle especially in black, it could be a 2.0tdi A5.

Do it just for the noise I loved how it just rumbled all the time. You found yourself putting the window down when not sitting on the motorway just to hear it burble away.

EDIT - The car pic you have shown the dealer has taken a picture of the wrong seat bolster (passenger) that doesn't wear, the drivers side does and can quiet badly. My car had 28k miles on it when I purchased and the bolster had worn already (repaired by Audi as part of my deal)

Well, I bought a different one :-)

2007, 69k miles, 'black on black', B&O, electric heated seats, full Audi history etc etc.

Great car and my first V8, really enjoying rumbling around. Somehow reminds me a lot of my old Corrado VR6 with its lazy power delivery.

After faffing about, I've concluded that I don't have an aux/phone cable in the glovebox as its essentially empty.

I do have some sort of phone cradle dock in the arm rest. Surprised to see so many options ticked and no AMI in the glovebox.

So I guess, I need to purchase a cable, pull out the stereo and connect a Tune2Air - is this the best advice based on my Googling?

Thanks!

Does it have MMI 2G nav? If not, it might explain the lack of AMI in the glovebox. If the cable were missing there's a proprietary socket about an inch long that will be on the side of the glovebox and will accept any number of ipod/iphone/USB cables plus a tunes2air dongle.

Just been to look, I can't see any USB/AUX slots in the arm rest. There is a 12v power socket and a phone cradle, which it isn't obvious how to remove.

Called the dealer who suggested a £120 cable and 2 hours fitting at £150 an hour + vat.... or going after market.

So I guess I need to pull out the stereo and connect a lead that terminates in the glove box.

The car has NAV, DVD in the boot, B&O but no form of AUX that I can find.

Hmmmm, what next?

Hmmm, yeah high spec for no aux/ipod interface. Mines in glovebox, quite a large bit of kit so you can't miss it - no plugs on sides of glovebox? Maybe someone has removed the gear?
I have a phone cable in armrest, no idea what sort of phone it would connect to though - never used it.

Anyway, maybe something like this http://www.audiretrofit.com/product.php/gateway_50...
I had a Gateway kit in a previous vehicle and it was very good.

I've also seen this stuff mentioned a fair bit in Audi circles.
http://fiscon-mobile.com/products/pro_mmi_lwl.php.

The Bose stereo is the best I've had in a car - not that I get board of the V8 wink

https://www.cartronics.co.uk/Audi-Gallery. I see you maybe Surrey based, I've looked at these guys before.....

That's weird unless very early cars with nav didn't have the whole 'tech pack low' package of nav and Bluetooth phone prep

I'm nr Gatwick if you need it fault code scanning/updated nav disc/spec confirmation smile

Yeah I thought they all either had AUX in the armrest or AMI in the glovebox, i.e. One or the other (not neither).

Sounds like a nice choice though otherwise thumbup

Mines had the Kufatec Fiscon Bluetooth kit retrofitted which supports audio steaming over a2dp, so I generally just use that for music with my iPhone
