Hello all,

Now I'm sure the answer is on the DVLA website but I'm damned if I can find it.

We have a reg on retention. I'll call this reg 1
My partner has just bought a car with a private plate on it which we have agreed will go back to the last owner. Call this reg 2.

We can't do anything until I get the V5 back from the DVLA in the new owners name (unless anyone knows otherwise). Then we want to put reg 2 on retention and send it to the last owner and put reg 1 onto the car. I can't see how to this without:

Waiting for the V5 to come back in the post. Do a transfer (reg 2 onto retention) and then wait for the V5 to come back again through the post with an age-related plate on it. Then do it yet again on line to put reg 1 on it, and then wait again for the V5 to come back again....

This seems very wasteful and also means the car will be on a age-related plate for a couple of weeks so we need to get plates made up, change insurance just for a couple of weeks......)

I can't see how to remove reg 2 onto retention AND put reg 1 onto the car at the same time.......

(Bit more history......The car is a 1990. It left the dealer with reg 3 and had this for many years. Then it went on to another private reg (this reg is irrelevant) and then some years later, back on to an age related plate (reg 4: this is different to reg 3) I wonder why reg 3 and 4 are different.....? Then the last owner put his plate on to it (reg 2 above)).

Thanks!

Do it online and its back within the week.

Had a plate on retention. Transferred it to my wife's car last Friday.
Got the new V5 the following Tuesday.

Think you can do the transfer of ownership online as well.

Thanks.

I'm paying the £80 but it was part of the deal and I'm happy with that.

Why did the seller not put the VRM on retention before selling the car to your partner? A mistake on their part as they have now lost their rights to the VRM.

Re the bit in bold, when you partner applies for retention they will become the grantee. The previous owner will have to become a nominee and will only re-acquire a right to the VRM if and when your partner* assigns it to vehicle of which the nominee is the RK. Until that time the rights remain with your partner as grantee.

 * The seller of the car your partner bought can't do this as he/she is not the grantee.

OP - you should have waited a few days while the seller took the plate back on retention and restored the original reg or age related one.

You don't necessarily get the original reg back, it goes into the available "pool" of plates and could have been re-allocated since, but more often than not you'll get the original back.

Much more tricky now you've bought the car and are now the grantee.

Thanks.

It's a TVR with a TVR plate on it. The seller wanted to sell it with the plate, I didn't want the plate. 6 hour train/bus journey to see it, 3 hour drive home so I wasn't going to view first and give him time to remove it. I wanted to go once and bring it home. Likewise he wasn't going to remove it in case I didn't buy it.

Gentleman's agreement he is going to get the plate back, on retention, so he can sell it. I just need to work out how to do it the quickest way.

I went through a similar process and I received the final piece of paperwork last week - total time taken was just under a month with lots of back and forth (and 2 bank holidays!). I think your plan is the quickest way to do so, complicated a little by the fact you will now be the grantee but as you have stated you've no interest in the plate so this isn't of huge importance.

Can't help with a suggestion of a quicker way other than to say that response times are pretty damn good these days so it may not take quite as long as you expect.
