An E92 M3 has caught my eye which I may go and see at the weekend. It's currently on 40k miles on an 09 plate which is fairly low IMO, however, when I looked at the MOT history the mileage on the first MOT is just 7k eek It's done around 10k/year since then...

I understand some of these cars are used just for weekends etc but would someone actually buy one new and only do 7k over 3 years and then hand it back? My initial thoughts are that it's been clocked, but surely it would've been on a 5k or 8k per year limit and if clocked would've been set to something more realistic :/ It's not exactly a ferrari, I'll be buying to use as a daily + trackdays etc.

On inspection if it's done loads more miles than suggested it will be obvious with the condition, but my concern is the condition based servicing being out of sync, potentially having done more miles between services etc which wouldn't be so obvious if it's been wound back only 10 or 20k.

Am I thinking to deeply into this?

I wouldnt worry.
Even if someone was going to clock a car they wouldn't wind it back to 7k over 3 years, there is no real reason behind that. Maybe if it had done bang on 30k miles at 3 year mark etc then someone may be suspicious of someone shaving off maybe 3/4k per year but certainly no common sense reason to take it to 7k over 3 years.

Check condition and go for it. Many do buy these cars and just dont have the time to use them to be honest

Hmm that's what I thought with such low it's a bit low to be clocked down.

I've got around 25k to spend, I've spotted the one described above, 09 LCI model on ~40k or for only 1k more an 11 plate ~60k comp pack - would the mileage on the CP version really hit the value come resale in a couple of years if it's on say 75k? The milage doens't bother me if it's in good condition, but these do seem to be fairly sensitive to miles once they get beyond 60k

(Both would be from BMW AUC, and AUC prices.)

I think the comp pack will be a lot more desireable than a few more miles.
