The power steering on my car is going away when the engine is at tickover. The rack was rebuilt last year, fluid is topped up, bled and the UJs are OK. Am I right to suspect wear in the pump ? Other thread s suggest that a new set of (Landrover?) internals are a good solution. I assume if it was the dreaded woodruff key then it would be a more permanent failure not just at low revs.

Could always pressure test the system with a gauge on the high pressure line and check it at various revs.

As for the pump no need to swap internals. A straight swap but the mounting holes need to be drilled out to 8.5mm and the bottom mounting hole has to be smoothed off, I swapped over the drive flange as well.

Look in the how to section as there is a power steering rack overhaul write up from me which includes the pump.

Thanks, I think this weekend will be spent examining the pump.
