I have always been sceptical of the various fat burning tablets on the market; the idea that I can accelerate the fat burning process by simply taking magic pills baffles me. However, my friend has used them and lost a considerable amount of weight, and swears by them.

So, I thought I'd give them a go, just to see what the fuss is all about. Got myself the Grenade ones, and have been using them as instructed (taking two with water, half an hour before breakfast and lunch). Unlike my friend, I have combined them with reasonably clean eating, and an intense (for me at least!) exercise programme. And I'm not sure what to make of the results.

Yes, my body fat has dropped by 3% in the last 6 weeks. However, one would assume that this could easily be achieved simply by the clean eating and exercise programme. So does this mean the fat burners have been a waste of money, or am I just using them wrong, or something else? I would like to hear views on the tablets, and perhaps some experiences if fellow PHers have been using them?

Yes, they are a waste of money like 95% of supplements on the market.

The tiny effect they could have on your metabolism is nothing compared to the changes you have made to your diet and exercise regime, I'd bet my life savings you would have seen exactly the same results without the pills.

The only potential real effect they could have in my opinion is a psychological one, whereby taking them on a schedule as prescribed helps to focus your mind and motivates you to stick resolutely to your diet and exercise plan.

I have always found motivation and self control the biggest factors in my battles with my physique.

If they worked, GP's would be handing them out like smarties at a kids party.

I tried them once (20 yrs ago as a callow and foolish youth) and all they gave me was appalling gas that could clear a dance floor in 10 seconds.

Fat burners can and do work (well the ones that contain proven elements) however they are also very mild and do not make a major difference to the end result. Personally I don't think they are required if all other areas are sorted and personally I'd prefer to save my caffeine intake for a pre-workout bump (most contain caffeine!).

As ever nutrition is by a huge margin the most important factor and ideally supported by a well structured exercise plan.

People who eat in a way that has caused them to gain weight and take fat burners are doing nothing more than wasting their own money, they aren't miracle workers.

The fat burning tablets you can easily buy will work, but only by a small (sometimes tiny) amount.

Fat burning tablets that are illegal (and lists 'may cause death' as a side effect) they work! Well, if you live through it hehe

I use to be big into Bodybuilding and the only thing (drug wise) that works is T3/4 and Growth Hormone. All carry a danger ( I'm NOT advising steroids etc at all) but the reason I mention this is that legal rubbish bought in supplement stores are just that, rubbish. I use to Keto diet and that worked well for me. Vast majority of supplements are junk. Diet and proper training work. For gaining size I was on about 7,000 calories a day spread over 7 meals. When cutting I would cut down to 4,000 calories region. Good quality protein and Creatine are all I ever used. Same with all the competition bodybuilders I knew.

I think years ago fat burning pills were highly effective, as they had pharmaceutical grade chemicals in them. This was effectively banned for over the counter products (and found in stuff like meth or speed) but rather than stop selling the pills (and lose money) the manufacturers used legal substitutes. Stuff like green tea extract etc., which as far as I know is not anywhere near as effective, and has only anecdotal evidence to support its claims.

There are also the fat binding pills, which as far as I know do work, but the problem being if you eat too much fat you end up lagging your pants.

It's like supposed cures for cancer: if it worked, safely and to any noticeable degree at all, it would be EVERYWHERE. You'd be fending your GP off with fistfuls of it.

In clinical trials, sometimes when it becomes clear that the new drug being tested is wildly better than the control, they'll stop the trial because it would be unethical for the control group patients to remain on a clearly inferior treatment (or none at all). The medical establishment wouldn't be just sitting on this if it was any kind of effective option.

There are other drugs that work better than t3/4 & growth.... They're certainly not the only things that work!

I agree but was only saying what I would have used. I've known people to use some right dangerous stuff. Trenbolone was spot on for fat loss. Certainly many many things out there for it all.

If you can buy it in a shop, no prescription, It's not going to do much.

As others have said, if it worked, we wouldn't be such a nation of fatties.

This is a nutshell.

What you've probably bought is a combination of caffeine and substances that prevent digestion of fat. Too much and you'll overdose on caffeine and suffer a dietry lack of healthy fats.

Plent of fresh vegetables, cut out sugar, processed foods, cheese, cut out bread. But that's not what I have the discipline for. wink

Ephedrine is supposed to work...but it's illegal, however it is possible to create it mixing legal substances. However I would not do this not endorse or recommend it and have never done it myself.

Me I have a coffee or a sugar free redbull before the gym seems to help me work a bit harder and I don't eat sugar rich things. Its dull and after 4 months you get few if any more results but then I lost 3 stone so was happy and just go to gym and work that bit harder each session.

Fatties want a pill so they can absolve themselves of any responsibility. Oh an while I have never had the Grenade pills I do like the taste of there protein bars.

ECA stack used to be popular years ago to lose weight (allegedly). Ephedrine- caffeine- aspirine. Rather them than me. Presumably works by increasing metabolic rate, but there's never a free lunch .

Unless you go into a Mercedes dealership :-)

But in all seriousness, I remember when the first wave of these were launched about 10 years ago, I think the most popular was called Alli and you could buy them in Boots etc (and Tesco)

When you can buy something in Tesco in the same way you can buy a loaf of bread you have to think it can't be all that.

Bodybuilders (proper ones) will often be using some pretty serious stuff but of course they are looking to get shredded and are following an intense workout programme and diet.

Ephedrine is the only ones i have ever used. If you buy the right ones then they do give you energy, make you feel wide awake and can help with weight loss mainly because the stop me feeling hungry so helps if your bad with eating loads of snacks.

All the crap you can buy off the shelf is a waste of money so don't bother.

Just remember to take care if you do use any, everybody is different. I have used Ephedrine on and off for over 10 years with no issues but that doesn't mean it wont cause you health problems so take care.

Ephedrine + caffeine works well, blunts the appetite, speeds up metabolism and gives you boundless energy (till it runs out). Proven to be fairly safe in the grand scheme of things, great pre-workout too.

Clen also works, as does DNP, but there not ones to mess around with, particularly DNP as it'll kill you if you fk up the dosing.
