The Old Siam is excellent if you like Thai food.

For Italian, Toto's is unbeatable IMO.
Traditional fayre would be The Plough.

Forgot to mention Stonegate Yard is also excellent.

My first proper meal out was in York. At the Biltmore Bar and Grill. Rack of lamb with a great red. I was blown away.

And I was blown away by a burger I had there a couple of years back. Better than anything else I've had in the UK.

Has been excellent for years (I think I ate there within a month of it opening - and I don't want to remember how long ago that was).
However, I think it may still be closed following the flooding of the Foss.

The park (http://www.theparkrestaurant.co.uk) and the Starr Inn in the museum gardens (http://www.starinnthecity.co.uk/starcity_mobile.htm) were both recommended to me last time I was there - and both were booked solid so I can't tell you if I liked it or not.

Another vote for Blue Bicycle. Lovely food and lovely venue. I think it used to be a "house of ill repute" back on the day. There are still some styling cues reminding the patrons of the interesting history. Unfortunately, it seems their website advises that they are currently closed due to flooding.

Sounds like I'll end up rather fat by the end of the week. Can any of the locals recommend somewhere to get the car MOT'd while I'm there.

I was impressed with the Star Inn the City recently, nice ambience and outlook.

Also ate at Stonegate Yard not so long back and was unimpressed, I think we fell unlucky as they were under pressure to have us in and out for a large party, still, not really excusable and it put me off.

Stonegate Yard is pretty poor. Plenty of better options in York

If its for a special occasion I would recommend Le Cochon Aveugle. Otherwise good places are El Goucho for steak, Totos for Italian, Meltons ( on Scarcroft Road) for fine dining, Rice Style (on Bishy Road) for Thai, Ambiente for tapas, Barbakan for Polish, Cafe No. 8 for bistro, Winner Winner for chicken dinner. You can probably tell I eat out too much!

For MOTs I use the York MOT Centre on Hospital Fields Lane as they only do MOTs so are impartial and have always been fair. A similar place is the MOT Shop off James Street.

Moroccan food is my holy grail, rare to find in most places but I'll always try and search one out. There used to be one there (Tassili ?) and it was memorable. Lamb and chicken Tagines done in a traditional way, cinnamon couscous. I wish they'd open a branch in Salop.

All I can add, is the advice to avoid Silvano's like the plague. Very large portions, which are awful quality.

I'm now back home and am somewhat fatter than I was. Generally impressed with York for a long weekend away.

Il Paradiso del Cibo and El Gauchos were my two favourite places. Ambiente was also good for Tapas.
