..Okay, so mulling over chucking in all three of my cars and buying one all rounder which can do family duties but be more than just a boring tin box for when I am on my own. Have seen an A4 3.2 FSI advertised locally, which would appear to tick a fair few boxes....however, do these have the timing chain issues that the 4.2 S4 has and also the carbon deposit thing that direct injection Audis can suffer with? I don't really want a diesel, so something like this, which is rare and under-stated might do the trick. The cheapest B8 S4s are around £15K, so £8K for a 2008 3.2 FSI seems quite reasonable really! Most of the performance for half the purchase price. Either this or a E90 330i, which can be had for similar money...

They may be cheap cos they are in the £500 a year to tax? I thought the 3.2 engines were pretty good. My old boss had a TT with the V6 engine and it sounded lovely!
This is a 2008 car and the Autotrader ad quotes £290 to tax. I think the 3.2 in the B8 came with lower emissions...but I may be wrong. It has 261 BHP, which is a little more than the B7 3.2 (or was it a 3.1?)....the quoted performance is almost identical to my current Merc CLK430 which is absolutely fine as I really don't see the next for anything faster than that car, but it will improve hopefully on the MPG of my V8!!My a5 3.2 was in the £285 tax band, no chain issues as long as you change the oil regularly, dont do the 2 years extended servicing, get it done yearly or every 10k. Its a good engine, and as you say most of the S4 performance, 0-60 in 6.1. The B8 has VVT on exhaust and inlet as opposed to the B7 which only had one.

Have you considered the 3.6v6 in the likes of the passatR36 and the Passat CC, I ran the CC for just over a year, lovely motor ,
Yes I have, but I think they are £490 VED and the R36 is still fetching £10K or more. This £8K car is at the top end of my family car budget!Cupramax said:

Does it suffer from carbon deposits on the inlet valve like the 4.2 FSI? I am given to believe that this and the timing chain being at the back of the engine are the biggest bugbears....the car I am looking at has done 85,000 miles so both could be an issue, if they indeed are a weak point.Cupramax said:

Ive ran a B7 and B8 3.2 over the best part of 10 years now and never experienced any noticeable performance drop off with either of them. If the car feels lively and it should do, its more than likely fine, especially as the B8 VVT kicks in above 3800rpm you should notice that, its not quite Honda levels but it does liven up. greenarrow said:

Not that ive noticed, Ive ran 2 B7 and B8 3.2's over the best part of 10 years now and never experienced any noticeable performance drop off with either of them. Can they average 30MPG on a run and are they quick enough? I run an old CLK430 that will do 25MPG on a run and is a pretty quick car (0-100 around 15 secs and 155MPH limited MAX)...I am looking for similar (or slightly slower) performance to that, but with better MPG!! I decided I don't need a rocket ship, just something with enough umph to see off a 320d and entertain me when in the mood!
Mine would do 33mpg on a long run, cant comment on 0-100 but you wont be disappointed. Id expect it to be a tad quicker than the 430. More responsive than outright pace.greenarrow said:

Its a real shame, because that's a lot of car for the money! Also I have considered the Skoda Superb 3.6 V6, which is down on power, but cheaper, year on year and my idea of a Q car. Again its £490 a year VED. Crazy, as a 2008 330i I am looking at, with 272 BHP is £205 a year....
i had that straight6 in the 1 series which was a lovely sounding motor, bit of a damp squib in the heavier 3series no? Sold that and bought the 3.6 CC, VW should have put that in the golf rather than the the 3.2.worth the extra £300ved for the noise it makes, and extra ooomph,it went well for a big motorEdit:- I'm sure the Skoda just needs a map tweek to make 300bhp, ft he R36 seems quite popular in OZ, I have read they can make nigh on 340bhp with a map,and go even better with a DSG software tweek too.
