We have just returned from a week away in Majorca, and early last week my wife's Rolex Datejust (Men's model 116234) had stopped. I wound it up to no avail but she kept it on. Then about a day later it started again and would just keep crazy time such as gain 4 hours in an hour. We returned home yesterday afternoon and set it to the right time and it has kept perfect time since. It was purchased in February last year so under guarantee but is it worth taking it back if it is now working OK? Any idea what might have happened (airport scanner?)

Should have bought her a decent watch....

Either magnetism (unlikely as they're anti-magnetic and it would keep doing it), oil on the hairspring (unlikely because it would normally keep recurring) or it had a knock and caught the hairspring up on its stud (or possibly the edge of the centre wheel), which then released itself later.

She'll undoubtedly swear blind that she didn't knock it but it's by far the most likely explanation. It doesn't take much of a jolt at just the right (or wrong?) moment in the balance's motion for the spring to bounce and she may be genuinely unaware of when it happened.

Wouldn't worry about it unless it happens again - either of the first two reasons will show up again sooner rather than later.

OK thanks very much for the answer. She doesn't remember any knocks but we'll keep an eye on it
