Hi All

I know a few on here expressed an interest in my sound dreading installation. The work started today, please see my Flickr link below for the pictures as well as the Facebook link to my installer on the details of the materials and processes he's using. If anyone wants to embed the images in the thread feel free. I only I use iOS so can't upload anything I'm afraid.

I'll keep updating this thread as progress is made.

Thanks

James.

Nearly all done now, I've update the links in the post above. I'm also having a clear wax applied underneath the rear wheel arches to soften the stone and water noise that emenates from that region.

Because I want it a little quieter. Not sure why else I'd do it?

I do about 11k a year as my daily driver. I'm just after a little reduction in tyre roar. I know fitting 17 inch alloys with balloon tyres would probably help a lot too, but I like my 19 Carrera ll smile I'm going to get shot down in flames here...but I don't find the flat six THAT intoxicating, compared to my unsilenced weekend V8, that I would mind it being a little quieter under throttle if the compromise is reduced tyre roar. I know it's not for everyone, which is fine, but for my requirements I think it will help me enjoy the car even more as a daily.

PS
I only have before and after db readings at idle at the moment. Before was circa 54 and after was approx 45. I hope to get some moving readings tomorrow and at the weekend.

I don't like the sound of tyres though. It shouldn't make too much difference to the engine note/sound when approaching 7k rpm though. It will have less of a battle with the tyre roar wink

Tyre roar isnt very nice, I agree. I would love a car that could be quiet under light throttle on the motorway but as noisy as hell on a B road blast.

Evening all

I've just done an 'after' run. I drove the same 21 mile route incorporating 30 through to 70 mph. Pretty much all surfaces from ploughed field with traffic calming bumps through to fresh, smooth motorway.

I used an iPhone 6 with the SPLnFFT app (apparently very accurate) mounted on a RAM X mount, installed in between the seats on the section where the bar is.

First/before reading for the route was 73.1 dBA.
Second/after reading for the route was 70.1 dBA.

I found this site the best to explain db and sound reduction works.
http://www.sounddeadsteel.com/what-is-a-decibel.ht...

As far as I can tell a 3db reduction = 50% power reduction of sound. I'm sure someone more clever than me can explain better smile Obviously these aren't laboratory conditions but it's the best I could do on my own.

My ears tell me there is a noticible reduction. Not just in tyre roar but in suspension/tyre bump thimp over broken surfaces. Is it now a Lexus? No, but it is a calmer place to be on a cruise as well as reducing the suspension noise. On full throttle I didn't notice much difference, perhaps a little less bass.

My conclusion

If my car was a weekend toy there is no way I would have done this, in fact my weekend toy is possibly one of the loudest cars around. As a daily driver it has made it a more enjoyable drive to me. There seems to be minimal impact under heavy throttle/high revs, but it now shuts up a bit more over the appalling roads around here and when on a long cruise.

If anyone is in the South Yorkshire/Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire area and has been toying with doing something similar, and interested in a run out, please PM me and I'd be happy to oblige.

James.

PS
Apologies for the epic post.
