hi all
how much would you expect to pay for a aftermarket ecu and all the associated bits and pieces? id like to fit it all myself, is megasquirt best way to go? has anyone got a kit they want to sell as I know some of you proper tuners tend to swap it out for emerald or such like.

I use a microsquirt on mine, they're cheap, reliable and work out of the box. I didn't fancy building a megasquirt so opted for one of these. I wonder if this is some of the motivation behind replacing megasquirts with something else, to get away from not very well soldered components. Where as these are factory soldred surface mount boards. They also have very good documentation on the wiring and come with a proper Ampseal connector unlike the DB37 most megasquirts use. DB37 work but I find its tricky to add circuirts later on for extra sensors.
Mines been on there for a few years now and has worked great runinng the msextra firmware, I can't recommend that enough. I use a 2 wire bosch idle valve as it can't drive a stepper motor which is no bad thing replacing the current idle valve. The bosch idle valves are again cheap, simple and reliable. Orginally I ran the ecu with Fords EDIS8 system but I now use two VW coils packs. EDIS was great but but its limits are it doesn't allow spark cutting so I couldn't use launch control and the rev limiter has to be fuel cut but thats not an issue. With the msextra firmware you can repurpose the two spare outputs as coil drivers to give you 4 in total. I also use it with a TinyIOx add on to give me more sensor inputs and some outputs for fans, shift light and water injection. I'd say I've used the microsquirt upto its limit now, it has two fuel outputs that are happy to run 4 injectors each so its the same as 14CUX and just what I wanted when I started this. But now I know more I'd like to try a fully sequentially setup with a cam sensor and for that I need 8 fuel outputs so its replacement will be an MS3 pro.

price depends on the special features needed. also dont forget any aftermarket
ecu is only as good as the guy that does the mapping if you dont do it by yourself.

microsquirt seems like it will do all I need it to do by the sound of it. what id like to do is pull lucas ecu out and all the wiring with it and replace everything, I have never done this before but im pretty good with wiring diagrams and soldering (im a sparky) so would be asking you kind gentlemen for a few pointers along the way. once ecu is all done I have plans to turbo. im confident I can build the turbo set up, I built my old prelude turbo a few years back and that was a animal so looking forward to see how the tvr handles it, mine is the HC model which I believe is the higher compression model will this be a problem with a low boost set up?

I hear a lot about stepper motor causing the hunting idle and I believe its what causes that lovely shunt at low speed is this replaced using electronics rather than a mechanical mechanism. is there any wires from the lucas ecu that have to remain?

When I did mine the only cable that remained was the large one to the starter. I would recommend getting a quote for a loom from Shaun as it was great value and to be honest I don't think i could have sourced the cables and relays for the price it cost plus it was truly plug and play. From what i remember (it was a couple of years ago) you have to wire in the oil pressure sender, water temp sender, air temp sender (new sensor required in the intake air which replaces the AFM) and the TPS.
On top of that its the fans, injectors and stepper motor. Probably forgetting a few things though :P
