Chimaera - fuel starvation and mirrors help, please?

New Chimaera owner, just getting around it tidying up little odd jobs as I can.

Car seems generally sound , however after using it and parking for a short while,(10 minutes-3 hrs approx.) when I return to the car it starts and runs fine for about 3 or 4 miles, then seems to be short of fuel, and needs to be kept running by slipping clutch and judicious throttle blipping, when it clears after a few minutes it then runs well again.

My suspicions are initially around a fuel or coolant temp sensor with a dead band or fuel regulator? I will check the fuel pump connections and change fuel filter, but it seems very "predictable" to be bad connections or fuel blockage .

Anyone had similar or think I'm on the wrong track?

Firstly, if it were fuel starvation I would expect blipping the throttle would stall the engine as the mixture would become even weaker. I could be helpful to get Rovergauge connected to see what the ECU sensors are seeing

Secondly, you appeared to also have a question about mirrors

Yes more throttle needed indicates over-fueling rather than starvation. Mine will do this if I stall it within less than 30sec of cold start and can take full throttle with quite a long turnover to get it cleared.

Rovergauge would show if your sensors are all working properly as suggested. That would be a good start.

Mirrors! Looking for details of adaptors to fit corrado mirrors to my Chimaera, whilst I investigate what I can do to salvage the originals. Any photos, or drawings of the TVR ones, I know they are available but £90 seems steep....so I am having a og at making something with some help from a friend.

Even better, anyone bought a set and made copies or have them for sale .....?

Issue occurred again tonight, but car cut right out....unplugged the fuel rail sensor and it started and ran great for about 12 miles, then did the over/under fuelling thing....cleared itself after 3 minutes or so, and then I plugged fuel rail in again and it was faultless for 20miles or so home.

I'll see if anyone has Rover gauge locally and get it checked out.

Great fun when it's on song...even limited to 4k revs or so...while the engine is running in.

Dont guess at things, you will be a long time fixing it. The ECU is fully capable of logging internal faults, and all the sensor data is available using ECUmate or RoverGauge so you can see whats in spec or otherwise.

I had my car repainted at the start of the year and upon removing the mirrors found a lot of repairs had been made, getting new parts for the originals was quite hard and when found were pricey.

So I replaced with the VW mirrors getting adaptors from Fibreon TVR Bodywork Specialist in the West Midlands. Very pleased with the look but be aware of a couple of issues.

The wiring to get the VW mirrors to work on the original TVR switch is a nightmare. Also they sit a lot higher than the originals which causes a blind spot if you sit very low in the car, something you get used to but did have me worried for a time until I got used to them being in my sight line when entering roundabouts etc.

Beastmaster (!) car looks great, mirrors look perfectly natural, I was worried they may look too large, but they are not much different overall. My current thinking is to fit the corrado mirrors and then investigate exactly what condition my mirrors are in at my leisure. I will not modify the wiring unless my mirrors are beyond economical repair.

Re Rover gauge, good shout , I'll take the suggested action at once...

Have you checked the fuel return to the tank? Mine played up quite a bit until a fold in the return hose where it enters the tank was straightened out. It is located top right as you look at the tank but hidden behind. Check all along the same pipe for flattening too. It made a huge difference to my 400.
Agree with the Rovergauge top gear helps solve a lot of faults
