Excuse the title but couldn't think of a technical buzz word to use lol.

Right my mates Dad has a adsl connection coming into the house for his work with the council. This is attached to a 3Com wireless router.

Now the council have told his Dad this is a dedicated line and that my mate can't use the line.

We can't connect to the router wirelessly however we can get out to the net via the CAT5 ethernet ports on the back.

The question is can we plug a wireless access point or something similar into it so that my mate have wireless for his laptop?

If so any recommendations on routers?

Thanks,

Phill

yes

but why?

I have the very model. Who has the password to the router. Do you have encrypting on? and do you know what it is?

don't tell me they're going to manage it remotely....

The council have changed the password to the router which is obviously secured. As we can't get into the router we can't assign the laptop a WEP key as we don't know what the WEP key is.

A wireless bridge like this www.dabs.com/uk/productview?quicklinx=34LT might do it, though I have never tried to do this with one.

I have a bridge connecting the ethernet switch in my room (colour laser, XBox, a couple of old Macs) with the wireless network in my apartment, essentially your setup will be doing the same thing but instead of my ethernet switch you will be connecting into your router.

I'd be interested to hear how you get on.

D-Link DWL-810+ is the kind of product you are looking for, you just set it up and then plug a cat 5 cable into it and hey presto you have a wireless bridge
