Former barrister Rupert Massey, 59, abused three boys from 1971 to 1985 but was only arrested ten years later.
He did not go on trial until November 1999 and a month later he was jailed for six years on 16 counts of indecent assault.
Massey, who has been released, claimed he suffered stress due to the delay — caused partly by his failed appeals.
He was awarded £2,748 in damages and £2,478 costs by the European Court of Human Rights.
