Hello every one, I am currently thinking of getting a two seater sports car and the two I am looking at is the Elise and the VX220 (I know it’s a Vauxhall ).

First of all could someone please tell me what the actual 0-60 time is on the standard Elise S2 I know it says its 5.7 but is that what the car actually dose or is it more than that in reality, I know the VX220 N/A is some think like 6.4 although Vauxhall say 5.6

What are the servicing and running cost like on the Elise?

And why should I buy an Elise over the VX.

I had the same issue a year ago drove both liked both but when it came down to it the dealers attitude sold me.

Lotus dealer friendly, helpful and knowledgeable

Vaux dealer indifferent, more interested in selling an Astra.

Plus second hand values of the Vaux scared the hell at of me.

You will enjoy which ever you choose!

Like most cars the quoted times can be achieved. If you are at Santapod, on the right day, with the right tyres and you don't care a damn about your tyres, clutch etc....

I've had 3 Elises. Definately the one to go for, unless you can virtually steal a VX220. Believe me, the acceleration will not disapoint, especially if you can stretch to a 111S.

Incidentally, what is your budget? My S2 111S is for sale. 2002/52, owned from new, Ardent Red, 32K, FLSH. E-mail me if interested!

Buying a car like this really isn't about 0-60 times. They're all pretty much the same anyway and it should be much more about how the car makes you feel.

The VX has its advantages but at the end of the day, its not a Lotus!

Hi Morpheus, if you want an impartial and unbiased view you are in the wrong place. We are all Lotus fans / owners.
Now you know my bias, go buy a Lotus. They are simply the best. Vauxhall have never made a sports car. The VX is a lotus untill you get to the heavy iron lump that propels it and the monaro is a holden. Vauxhall is trying to import "badge cool" and to my point of view, they are failing.

Lets face it, the dynamics is not always the whole story. I did not get over 27mph all the way to work but I had a huge smile on my face 'cos I was in my beautiful Lotus. I know it is somehow cool to not be badge critical, but when you have a badge that symbolizes the heritage and innovation that Lotus does, looking at a badge that screams "rep wagon" does not give the same pride.

As I have said, I am biased. I have yearned after the Elise since it came out and the VX just doesnt have that passion regardless of dynamics.

morpheus-95, i see from your profile you've only posted this unbiased question on the Elise/Exige forum and not the VX one as well.
So i guess that in itself suggests you just need a push to go and get an Elise. I'm on my second one. I had a series 1 111s and now a series 2 111s. 3 of my freinds have bought Elise's in the last 18 months as they've seen it's the bargain supercar of our time. It has hertitage, and buckets of 'driver' appeal.
As previously mentioned in the thread, if you can stretch to a 111s, i'd go for it over the standard car. One of my mates is already looking at an upgrade from a standard car to 111S or 111R. I bought my 18 month old car, "04 model year car" in January with 7000 miles on it for £21K, including hard top. So you may want to go nearly new on a 111s rather than new on a standard car. The very best of luck to you on your purchase. You know which way to go!

Hello guys, thanks for your advice I should have pointed out from the start that I will be looking for a used S2 Elise and my budget will be about £18-19K

I must admit that the more I look at the Elise the more I love it but some things do put me off like the dearer insurance and serving cost but if it’s the better car then so be it.

What I really need is for someone to show me the Elise and tell me what I should be looking for with a used car so if there is any one who lives near maidenhead and wouldn’t mind giving me some good advice then I would really appreciate it.

That will buy you a nice S2 111s privately. Or you could get your balls out and get yourself one of these...

You can't have it all mate - yep it's going to be more to insure than a hot hatch or some other boring box and servicing will be commensurate with that but in the price brackett you're pitching into you're not going to be buying an old car so maintenance costs should not be high because you won't be replacing any big consumables anytime soon and you're not looking at the big services anytime soon either. Besides, servicing via specialists isn't THAT pricey anyway. Look at the £ vs. performance/fun you'll have and compare to something like a TVR, a Porka or a Ferarri and Lotus starts to become a very reasonably priced proposition.

Read the forums, search for buyers guides, tips etc in the forums here and in SELOC - there are a million threads already, one which I posted a big long list on only a week ago or so.

Get down to a local dealers and try some cars out, markets good for deals right now so get your cash and go get a bargain before the spring!

Edited to add: Have you checked the PH classifieds? Some SERIOUSLY good S2's in there for your price bracket mate, lots of 135R action which I'd be all over like a rash if I had the money!
