Was watching Top Gear (proper Top Gear) on Dave earlier, it was the one where Richard Hammond gets hypnotised by Paul McKenna such that he forgets how to drive. Then later he's hypnotised to believe that a pedal car is a real Porsche.

Thing is, I've heard of people who have had total memory loss who can still drive because apparently it becomes an instinctive muscle memory thing.

So is it all just a big scam or can you really hypnotise people to believe they're a chicken, or can't drive, or whatever?

I've had 3 mates who have been hypnotised and none of them remember the outrageous things they were made to do.

Nothing on top gear was real.

Hypnotism in the way its portrayed on TV is rubbish. When used in the NSH is has benefit but requires the co-operation of the patient. Same an Paul Mckennas shows, they need co-operation from the subject

If it's possible to cut a foot wide incision in a person's abdomen and uterus, remove a small human from within, then sew up the holes - all without anaesthetic - then I'm going to come down on the side of 'not complete bks'.

Quite where pretending to be a chicken (or the full back sucking off the no.8 at a rugby outing to a hyponist show) fit into this theory, I'm not sure...

I'd say from my limited experience of seeing people go under, at shows/holiday parks: yes.

purely because of what they did/said (of a highly adult nature) whilst under.

My understanding (not that I know anything myself but I have worked alongside psychiatrists, discussed it, and seen a few snippets of the process)... Yes it is real but what you see on TV is nonsense for entertainment. There are a wide range of techniques that you could call hypnotism. Most people who do it are not very good at it. If you are very experienced and find the perfect candidate you could take it further, make them do funny stuff... But no you can't just shake someone's hand a certain way and they'll go into a trance (as some TV "hypnotist magician actor" entertainers have shown).

It seems best suited as part of a wider-spreading strategy to help you achieve things you're already trying to do but struggling - giving up smoking, etc. You can't be told "you're no longer a smoker, the end." but it definitely helps your mind focus on the right things.

What particularly interested me was that one of them used it in his time as an army medic to reduce bleeding in a patient who'd had a leg blown off!

What? Are you aware of an epidural?

Anyway, I've been 'hypnotised' and it's bollcks IMO.

Some people are more susceptible to suggestion than others.

The stuff on TV is a fascinating bond between the hypnotist and the subject. The hypnotist give the subject permission to do daft stuff and the subject agrees to do it. There is no co-ersion, and the subject knows exactly what they are doing. They are not under a spell but they are disinhibited by the permission they are given. They are in effect play acting an expected role. The not remembering stuff after is rubbish.

There is no trick to hypnotism apart from picking the subject that agrees to do the daft stuff as above, even if they lie about it to their friends after.

Bit like religious types suddenly dancing about in church possessed.

It's not fair to say they lie about it. They pick very suggestive subjects and they make them believe that they can't remember it. If you believe what you're told, then you might be wrong but you're not lying.

Like your church example, if you can convince millions of otherwise intelligent people that the bible is literal, it must be pretty easy to convince a few of them that the reason they clucked around like a chicken is that had no free will and were in a trance.

An epidural is an anaesthetic... What did you think they did, put a real wooden block into your spine?

My fiancee was hypnotised and gave a midget a lap dance, so i'd say it was real in some cases laugh

I was always skeptical and many many years ago went to see a late night show staring Mr Methane.

The support act was a hypnotist and got various people up on stage, rejected a few and then did the old "look into the eyes, not around the eyes" routine and put the people under.

To one man, he said, "when I wake you, you will see a huge black man. He's going to start chasing you around the theater. You can't get out and if he catches you, he's going to fk you"

(Yes, it was that kind of late night show)

"3,2,1 you're back in the room etc"

With this, the bloke took off running at quite a clip, screaming his head off.

LOL's all round.

So he continued his act and left this bloke running around the theater and I'd guess his act was about 30 minutes long.

The victim wasn't particularly young or fit looking and kept running & screaming the entire time. I thought he was going to have a heart attack.

Of course, he could have been a plant but if he was an actor, that was the best actor I ever saw.

Sorry to disappoint, that's not how it works. No hypnotist in the world could make me give a midget a lap dance. She wanted to do it and hypnotism gave her an excuse.

She probably wanted to do it for laughs rather than arousal though... I'm sure that's it wink

Well the "hypnotist" is hardly going to choose an obviously fake actor, is he? And by the sounds of the show, most of the audience were probably pissed enough to believe anything they saw hehe

Always wanted to know if I could be hypnotised, as it always makes me laugh just how quickly these people seem to go under. hehe

You have to want to be hypnotised, you need to be a willing participant or your both p155ing in the wind.

I got as far as a state of deep relaxation, I felt heavy, the lights dimmed and I felt the warm sun on my face, I could smell the flowers and the feeling of grass under my feet was real - but this was ruined by a Police siren outside my shrinks office, she could do with moving her practice to the country rather than the City. I never actually made it down the stairs into the garden, which is a shame as I wanted to see what it was like.

She never tried it again, moved on to CBT instead, which was a waste of time.
Cock & ball torture?

Think I prefer the sound of the garden thinglaugh

My mate was bullied by his missus to go to a hypnotist to give up smoking. He said he knew what they were doing all the way through and that it wasnt going to work.

When he got out he lit up and the cig tasted disgusting, he said he really had to persevere to keep on smoking.

Wouldnt say what they had done to put him under.
