I sent a fishing email to my local Scamera Pratnership - and got the response I wanted! My email concerned a mini roundabout near wear I live which I have almost daily near-misses on.

The response was:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Thank you for your e-mail regarding traffic safety at a roundabout near
your home.

You stated in your e-mail that the issue seems to be with driver
inattention, rather than speed, so I would suggest you contact your
local road safety team at your council, as speed enforcement would have
little positive impact in a case such as this.

Yours sincerely,

So they can't nab people for speed, therefore they recommend contacting the council who no doubt will put road calming measures on the junction.

Nice, real nice.

Aaaaah, Thames Valley. I spoke to their "Internal Communications Manager" today, to enquire why it took their switchboard operator no less than 6 attempts to put me through to Bracknell Police Station, to an extention that did not go straight to voicemail.

What is so remarkable about that?

What would you have wanted him to say?

err, "Safer Roads Partnership" - shouldn't theybe making the roads safer by, for instance, dealing with problems of ill discipline on roundabouts?

Why?
The Highways Authorities have road safety departments and engineering staff to do this very thing. That is what they are there for.
This criticism is petty and unfounded. Use the correct people to do the job you require. Criticise wher it is deserved and this is not deserved at all.

The guy is part of a Road Safety 'partnership'

People having near misses at roundabouts would fall into road safety I'd guess. Or is that just me.

Because the email reinforces what most people here suspect - that rigid enforcement of speed regulations is detrimental to road safety as a whole.

I quote from the website homepage at www.saferroads.org/:

highway robbers said:
The main aim of the Safer Roads Partnership is to work together to reduce casualties on Thames Valley's roads by deterring speeding and promoting safety - not to prosecute drivers.
Seems to me that they are not only about gaining revenue...

There is reason to believe that he is Steve Callaghan of the Cumbria S Camera Pratnership, a man who in my more charitable moments I consider to be misguided. I'll not post what I think when I don't feel charitable.

Well if they're not interested in safer roads as a whole concept and they're really only interested in Nicking people for Speeding maybe they should change their name to something more appropriate.

I'm fed up of 'PC' naming; Safety Cameras , Casualty Reduction Partnerships etc call a spade a spade and not some flowery, poncy load of Bo**ocks FFS.

Driver Persecution Partnerships doesn't seem quite as cute and fluffy in the press releases though.

It would be even more worrying if he really believed in what he said. Who knows but him?

So please explain why these people are called a SAFER ROADS PARTNERSHIP? They have been pointed to a road safety problem and they have washed their hands of it. At the very least they should have taken the responsibility to pass the information onto the body that can deal with that particular aspect of road safety.

Face facts, this clearly says if they can't put a camera up and get some nice revenue, they aren't interested. The whole speed camera debacle is a farce of Orwellian proportions.
