Hmmmm ... Are all electric power steering pumps pretty much the same?
I know that the Saxo and Astra pumps seem to be commonly used here but is that because they have some specific compatibility or feature set or it it just that they were convenient / available? can you pretty much use any electric PAS pump?

...in the nose out of the way and just having the remote reservoir in the engine bay but if they make loads of noise I wonder if mounting it in the nose would end up turning the bodywork into a sounding board and amplifying it...?

I fitted a Saxon PS pump to mine it's completely silent. The best place is as you say in the nose. Mine is on the drivers side attached to the bulkhead by the front wheel as close to the rad as it will go.
You are also right to buy one with a remote reservoir. The combined units are too big to fit. I have a rubber tube about 25mm long running to a small reservoir directly above the pump. That avoids lots of pipe and a reservoir further back in the engine bay. I did have the reservoir further back above the exhausts but the fluid took on a lot of heat which I thought was a bad idea hence my modification.

Not the best pic, but the PS pump is all black and mounted centrally on the front crossmember where the expansion tank once lived. It is the astra version with the combined reservoir and fits without issue.
It is so quiet when running that when first fitted I held a length of wood against it to make sure it was working.
I used the original Vauxhall mounting bracket which can easily be adapted to suit.
You've got an awful lot of stuff between the front crossmember and the radiator there Peter!

I've already moved the coolant expansion tank off to the offside inner wing to clear some space so I don't know whether I'll have the space to get the PAS pump in there which was why I was thinking about inside the nose (plus it would get a lot of cool air past it there). Maybe there is more room there than I remember...

Cool, so it's just a switched positive and chassis negative on those yeah Peter?Big ass 70 or 120 amp relay and fuse straight from the back of the alternator (well, actually off one of these: http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorsport/battery-c... which I've got in the front valance to give a good feed for the rad fans too) triggered off the charge terminal (as per other discussion) - should be easy.

Just need to try to find as many ways to stop the bloody thing destroying my back again once it's back alive...
