My 1Ds II has finally arrived!!
I've just spent the last few hours reading bits of the manual, pressing random buttons and taking photos of anything within flash range, and first impressions are that it is very, very good!
It's not as heavy as I was expecting, although once you fit a lens and flash gun it does start to become quite a handful.
I've not had a chance to play with RAW files yet, but one test shot I did with the largest jpg (16MP) gave this:
I've not done anything except resize and save for the web in PS.
This shot is a 100% crop of part of the original image, and saved for the web too - nothing else has been done to it.
This was taken hand held under a kitchen light with a 100mm macro lens.
Settings were:
Shutter speed: 1/125s
Aperture: F3.2
ISO: 1600
This is really only scratching the surface of what it'll do though, so I'll post some more shots once I take a few more.
P.S. anyone want to buy some Velvia?

bloody hell, that is immense for ISO 1600
Exactly what I was thinking! No discernable noise whatsoever and awesome clarity / sharpness out of the box. I'd hate to see what would pop out of my D100+18-50 if I tried to take the same shot. The D2x is 12MPs you say? Its coming soon you say? Oh crap.....ehasler said:

Hey Ed, if you take it off "auto" you can take even better pics… ![]()
It doesn't even have an Auto mode! I was looking for the green square and the icons of mountains and athletes, but they've forgotten to include them! I may have to send it back!
S'pose I shouldn't judge others by my own standards!! Serious bit of kit that mate

16Mp JPG - that's obscene, 3x the size of my RAWs!
Largest (16MP) JPGs are about 5MB in size, but the RAW file is ~ 15MB, which produces a 100MB 16 bit TIFF file - just under the size of a 35mm slide scanned at 4000dpi.
Doh, sorry Ed, I got my Mp and Mb mixed up. Need more coffee
At times like this I think back fondly to my 386SX PC of 1992 which had a 40Mb HD
I have just tried the same shot on my 20D (ISO 1600 F3.2 1/125s) and it came up with this:
I think it is safe to say the 1D handles it slightly better!
Edit to add taken with a Tamron 28-75 Macro wanna-be lens at 75mm. Obviously I can make it a lot better at ISO100!

I'm finding this quite good reference material. Do other people want to post similar pics with their cameras for comparison? Don't want a mine's better than your's but would be good to see real world comparisons across the whole budget range.
thats a good idea;
Canon 1D, macro lens, same settings as above
and here's one from my *cough*nikon*cough* D1x. I should also point out that I used the backwards 50mm trick here, but i doubt you could tell the lack of sharpness with that NOISE
When can i get that 1dsII?
