Anyone here living in Gothenburg?
Discussion
...I'm from England but my girlfriend is Swedish so I spend a lot of time in Sweden, most of my friends here I've met through her and other than drinking we dont share many interests, I also dont speak Swedish which doesnt help... would be nice to meet some English speaking people with similar interests, or any expats who are up for a beer or two?
Cheers..
Join the conversation more and start some topics. I used to work for a Swedish company based out of Gothenburg and perfected the 5 steps theory. Swedes in particular (though I've also found it with Dutch, and less with German) can sense a Brit from about 5 paces away, and if they're polite, will slowly change the language to Swenglish then English to make you feel more included in the conversation. If you start a discussion in English, they'll carry it on, even if you're no longer a part of it
There'll always be quick bits of info shared between Swedes in Swedish that dont need to be a conversation, just an observation or a I need to take a s
t - please excuse me. But on the whole, they're very happy to have a stab at English
In a way it made me feel ignorant, so I learned basic Swedish. Not enough to speak or fluently, but enough that if it just went Swedish for a while I knew roughly what people were talking about, toilet requirements n'all
The question really is whether you can get along with these people when you take language out of the equation.
Things that most Swedes will find interesting
Eating fish
Running into the sea
Drinking
Eating fish
Salads
Motorbikes
Doom metal
doing stuff in extreme weather
More running into the sea
Thinking up abstract ideas and seeing if they're possible
Hardcore coding sessions followed by the gym
It's the same anywhere though, different people are into different things, just got to find some crossover
