I was chatting to a customer the other day about the Euros and he casually broke into a story about when he was stood behind the goal at the Euro 96 semi final when Gazza missed that cross from Shearer in extra time.
I was a bit surprised and a little impressed - I remember watching that game on TV and haven't met anyone who was actually there.
Got me thinking - who has been to a 'momentous' occasion in person?
I've met someone who went to Live Aid (although if everyone who claimed to be at Live Aid actually went, I think the crowd could have filled 2 x Wembleys....)
For what event can you sit back and say
"I was there that day"

I was at Donnington when Mansell Crashed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVvebZwmLKU
I don't remember seeing the crash but remember the big blue tarps they constructed around the wreckage.

I was at the Audi Dealer in Milton Keynes when the floor collapsed
Funny that, the Audi in Derby has had it's floor collapse as well and currently operating out of a tent.
wonder if it was the same dodgy construction that caused it with a gross case of overloading!I was there when she found the keys in her bag that she swore weren't there. Am still not allowed to mention it.
Whoops
Was at Paddock Hill Bend when Jaques Laffette broke his leg(s?) just after the start. Didn't see the accident. Was watching Mansell, Piquet and Senna go through Druids.

I was in the grandstand on the 18th green at Carnoustie back in 1999 when Jean Van de Velde threw away a 3 shot lead on one hole. In the course of doing so, you may recall he went for a bit of a paddle.

We were only kids then but living in Carnoustie it was pretty cool to watch in person just minutes walk from my house.
What I'm always struck by is how gracious Van de Velde as in defeat. When asked if this was a disaster, he said (and I paraphrase) "a disaster, no. A disaster is genocide in Rwanda. I've lost a golf tournament and lead a life most people dream of".

Not me, but my cousin had left the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi about 2 hours before it was attacked, and the bloke who used to shear our sheep's wife (how tenuous a link can you get?), was on the high street in Hungerford when Michael Ryan went nuts.
