I've just caught up with a couple of threads in which serious allegations were made about someone drug dealing etc. These allegations were presented as fact. That is not acceptable.

Before you all shout "it's true though", the discussions showed no respect for innocence until proven guilty and as such could easily prove incredibly libelous.

That is why they have been removed.

I think the story is well out now and the facts of a drug dealing case from 1992 are well recorded elsewhere.

One thing is fact! Most people here despise drug dealers and they are of the lowest life.

Out or not, the way it was relayed on here was not acceptable.

Good work Ted. There are too many people posting whose knowledge of the technical aspects of UK law is rather limited.

That sounds like an opinion to me. Fact.

Good grief is free speech totally dead - the man concerned has been charged with a serious offence, the story has been in autosport, BBC, Motoring news etc.

"Free speech" should exist in parallel with the wisdom as to when to shut up.

As I said earlier, there are times when free speech is restricted - you cannot run around making claims about someone, especially if that someone is going to be appearing in court on related charges. If you do, you could prejudice their chance of having a fair trial and the case against them could be dismissed. What would you have achieved then?

If you have the right to air your mind freely you should also have the brains to shut the hell up from time to time. I doubt that Ted would have anyone reporting facts. The problem is that sometimes people's imaginations run riot and they will blurt out all sorts of things, based on fact but which move into the realm of lible and slander.

No-one is perfect, least of all me, but there are some whose gob is in overdrive and even a quick pitstop hasn't appeared to give them time to reflect on the error of their ways.

Oh and innocent until proven guilty still prevails in the land.

Anyway I think we should all wait until the trial! I hope they hold it in Bristol Crown Court! My cousin is a barister there and he gets some interesting trials. It would make a good day out as I can also visit Concorde and the SS Great Britain!

There's a great area called St Paul's, i hear they're really anti-drugdealers there. I find that large Jamaican gentlemen are especially keen to discuss such ideas, strike up a conversation with them in the street, they won't mind.

I apologise for the furore my post caused. It was actually a lighthearted comment with some (I thought obvious) spoof comments.

I appreciate the principle at play re libel etc and will be more measured in future.

That's beacuse if they get the details and facts wrong they can get into a huge amount of trouble for it from the law.

Why are you blobiing about the racing media covering this anyway James, you seem to have done pretty well by yourself to spread the word up until now?!

To be fair this issue with Vic Lee has become crazy. There is no question that several people let their minds run wild but ultimately the guy has been arrested and is currently locked up awaiting trial on drugs offences. That is a fact.

Why on most websites all trace of this has been removed is silly. Sure don't pre-judge the situation but I can't see why simple reflection on the truth is a problem.

Given most BTCC stories at the moment seem to be focused on which manufacturer might be involved in 2006 (because there isn't much happening for 2005) you'd have thought this would have provided something for the new desk of most publications.
