As above really. On occasion getting a loud click from the starter but nothing more, and becoming more frequent. Would like one of the updated lower current versions. Previous threads quite old now.

Any advice appreciated.

I would be interested to hear the answers to this one.

I am on my 4th starter motor in 7 years, about to fit number 5 as it has failed again.

I tried a WOSP starter which has the servo relocated away from the manifold, based on the denso unit sounded like a good shout but I had the same issue as the owner in this thread so was swapped out for a standard unit after less than 2 weeks and refunded.

I did email WOSP this week and they assure me that this was an issue with the earlier design and this has now been resolved so not sure whether to give it another go.

What I am really interested in is the Brise unit which does ot have an external solonoid operating levers so apparently does not jam when hot.

I went power lite without any problems, however my cross bolts are not cap heads that could foul the correct seating of the starter. The brise unit looks good though

I get the loud click from mine as well so it's on my hit list once I've got the MOT out of the way.

Recent thread here has some good suggestions:

Getting on for nearly five years of reliable use out of my cheapo Global Power starter that I purchased from a Land Rover parts specialist.

I love buying expensive sexy parts for my TVR but given my £65 Global Power starter works brilliantly and is giving excellent reliable service, I think even I'd balk at paying almost £400 for that lovely looking Brise unit.

Assuming my Global Power starter packed up tomorrow which it is showing no absolutely signs of doing by the way, I could have another five Global Power starters for the price of one Brise unit. That's 30 years of starter motors for the cost of one Brice, will the Brice last 30 years?

Is the fancy Brise starter really that much better, if a cheap Global Power starter can crank the engine super strongly and starts the car on the button every time (which it does), surely you dont really need more than that?

Its just a starter motor after all, once the engine is running it's done its job.

I am not sure about the OPs requirements but for me having been through a number of standard starters all due to solenoid failure I am looking towards something different than the OEM starter. The issue for me is that the solenoid gets really hot being next to the exhaust manifold and even more so on track days.

I know a number of fellow track goers who are using the modified Denso unit with the relocated solenoid and they are perfectly happy so this is an option.

The Brise unit looks very good indeed and not a Denso unit which myself and others have had issues with in the past.

If I was not doing trackdays I would go straight for the Global Power unit but I think the issue for me here is the position of the Solenoid and the added heat of trackdays. Yes I could buy 5 Global power staters for one Brise but having the car off the road for a couple of weeks whenever this issue arrises is more an issue for me as I do not have a ramp to do the work myself.

.... Decisions scratchchin

Another option to the manifold issue is to go standard starter and ceramic coat the manifolds.

Have you still got cats Mathew?

In my case a full de-cat (pre-cats removed and an ACT Y-Peice fitted) made a massive difference to the amount of heat my starter solenoid is being subjected to. Before the de-cat I couldn't get close to the whole starter motor it was that hot, after the de-cat I can climb in my pit an grasp the starter solenoid in my hand after a long spirited drive.

It's gone from so hot it's untouchable, to just warm.... that has to make a massive difference to it's life expectancy as born out by the fact my Global Power starter has been 100% reliable where before the de-cat I went through two units which both suffered from heat related solenoid failure.

If some of your past standard starter motor failures were before a de-cat then you really have to discount them as I do, you really cant expect even the best starter to survive the kind of heat the fully catted Chimaera or Griffith exhaust gives off.

Just saying wink

Agreed on the cats but all my failures have been post decat. (both precats and main cat)

Ceramic coating Isn't cheap, zircotech cost 800 quid plus to do the manifolds

Performance 1 Coatings have provided me good service on numerous occasions. Cheaper than Zircotech.

Many thanks for the suggestions thus far.

I don't do trackdays, just wondering if some of the more expensive versions would last longer. Current one, brand unknown, has lasted less than 3 years and 4k miles. All my cats are in place and will stay for the moment at least.

ETA - somehow missed the other recent thread. Now ordered the global power version, good value at £60 delivered.

Is it worth or even possible to wrap some sort of heat proof material round the starter motor to deflect some of the heat. I noticed TVR parts direct selling a piece for about £30 but there is some on ebay for about a tenner. Good for temperatures upto 550 degrees.

Wrapping the starter will also create an insulation to maintain heat, a shield would be a better solution to prevent radiant heat

Not if you use a corrugated type separator etc to create an air gap Dave tongue out scotchbrite pads etc no melting thus far laugh I actually used thinner then the silver reflective thermal cloth over that

SEE STARTER MOTOR HEAT SHIELD

ALU HEAT SHIELD FROM B&Q,ON AIR INTAKE TO PLENUM

Cut a piece of the B&Q aluminium hose to fit loose above the starter motor. Push in and mine stays in place despite shake from pot holes and speed bumps. No rattles. Should help you keep the motor cooler on track days.

New higher torqe motor supplied by London & Essex Auto Electrics, Units 284 High Rd, North Weald. 01992 523660. £105. Easy for you Matthew to pick up. Spins my 500 engine like a dervish.

Anybody tell me where I can get new solenoid to repair my 50K miles old standard starter motor. Thanks.

FOOTNOTE. Intermittent miss fire cured. Had a loose ignition feed fuse No8. Also a squirt of Servisol Super 10 on ECU & AFM contacts.

That's a clever idea clap

Never tried it, can you set fire to Scotchbrite or is it non-flammable then?

Simon. Where did you get the silver thermal cloth from? Thanks.

Cheers Pen, I'll check that out. Good idea with the heatshield.

Don't try this at home! 1 second with a blow lamp. Will stick with B&Q flexible Alu heat shield.
