I'm aware that you can legaly drive without an MOT to a garage for a pre-arranged MOT test or for rectification work required for the MOT test as long as the vehicle is not in a dangerous condition.

However,is there a maximum distance you are allowed to travel to said garage? I'm asking on behalf of a friend who has a horsebox based on an LGV, and the garage that does the work is not very local (~20 miles away).

Provided you have a confirmed appointment you can within reason choose your MOT station. So so long as there are not loads nearer then you will be fine.

all a bit common sense I'd have thought.
You wouldn't book the car in for a new tyre 150 miles away, but if it was it was a eg. specialist carb that needed setting up by a specialist company to get the emmisions right that would be reasonable i'd have thought.

If it's something dangerous though, would you want to drive it a long way?

He will be OK Mike provided that he travels straight for the pre booked test and doesn't go on a circular tour holiday/shopping trip, i.e. purpose of journey soley to get it tested/return.

I travel that distance for my vehicle to be tested despite a plethora of outlets locally. Mind you always with a near expring Cert but would have no qualms if it had expired.

Thanks for the replies. I was fairly sure it would be ok, but the owner is a very cautious type.

There is AFAIK nothing dangerously wrong, i.e. brakes and suspension are ok etc.

Is it based on an LGV or a light commercial (Transit etc)? Are you taking it for MoT test(class 7) or an Truck plating certificate?

If the latter, providing a GV9 prohibition order was not issued then it is OK.
