On behalf of a friend...A group of us have been on a driving holiday in the Black Forest & my friends 911 lost all drive.
Symptoms, before leaving for Germany a new noise appeared. A high pitched whine that gets louder as the revs bulid. It is a 5 speed tiptronic.
Warning lights came up flashing between drive & fourth. On the day the car lost all drive, it was still possible to use reverse.
Before the car was recovered to a Porsche main dealer a local experienced car mechanic had a look & said he could smell burnt ATF. He suspected the gearbox was low on oil or the oil had become burnt possibly blocking the filter.
The main dealer had a look & said a new battery was needed as a low voltage was causing problems with the electronics. They claimed to have checked the quality of the gearbox oil & it was not burnt & they topped it up with half a litre.
After relieving my friend of nearly 600 euros he drove the car for about 10 mins & as I was following in my caterham I heard the high pitched whine again & shortly after it started to lose drive.
He has now decided to get the car recovered to the UK.
Any ideas what the problem may be? My first thought was low or contaminated ATF fluid causing problems with the torque convertor.
Is the tiptronic box known for problems?
The car is a late 2004 model with 38,000 miles covered.
