Trying to get an answer to this question from as many as possible so I have already asked elsewhere

The engine on my 430 has started making a noise a bit like "pinking" if you remember that from the old days. Only at certain revs and loads and it could easily be something metallic that is loose and rattling in the engine bay. The obvious worry is could it be the exhaust manifolds. Certainly the noise reminded me a bit of the rattle I used to get from the exhaust of my Elise before the exhaust and presumably the cat warmed up except that rattle occurred at all speeds.

AFAIK the engine is standard with the original 2008 manifolds and the only mention of exhaust in the service history is the replace of an exhaust bracket.

So for those who have had an exhaust manifold go, what were the symptoms?

When my 430 manifold went the exhaust note became a lot louder and I had a dust like powder collect in the channels on the side panels in the engine bay. Later found out that the dust was the manifold insulation being blown around by the leaking exhaust manifold. I also use to get a vibration rattle noise at certain revs from a broken support bracket on the exhaust tail pipes.

Mine rattled at certain RPM. The rear valves can rattle so check those and any mounts, too.

Mine had a "death rattle" on start up just like a hydraulic tappet / valve had stuck open !! it was really worrying. Turns out it was the exhaust manifold gaskets gone and was sucking in air until it got warm around that area 30 secs or more then it would disappear never to be heard again until the engine was stone cold.

I was convinced on a mechanical issues somewhere deep in the engine, it was a real bad rattle.

exhaust tips can also rattle, they (in true Italian style) are not very well attached to the actual exhaust pipes and the welds break. The tip doesn't fall off, but will rattle at certain RPM.

The rattling / pinking noise is when the engine is warm and it seems to be at just 2500/ 3000rpm, though I cannot be absolutely sure about this since the noise when the bypass valves open might well drown it out.

However, there is a ticking sound at idle when cold and which I had put down to a valve slightly out of adjustment. No rattling pinking when cold. And no extra noisy exhaust as you normally get when an exhaust system is blowing.

I'll start the car up and do a short run tonight to try and be more precise. But thatsnks to everyone for all the suggestions. Lots of things to check.

If it is pinking, and it is occurring at the right rev levels, Change your fuel for the
highest octane possible.
If it goes away it is fuel or timing.

Don't you just love it when a problem disappears, usually temporarily but without you doingcanything 😦 Anyway started the car up from cold last night and there was only the normal mechanical engine noises. Definitely no chuffing from the manifolds. So I took it for a run and there was no unusual noises at all.

I am prepared to accept that I might have been mistaken about start up noises but the noise when running that caused me to post here was not imagination. The person in the passenger seat commented on it too. So it looks as if there is no manifold issue but something somewhere is intermittently rattling. Will check the exhaust hanger and pipe trims.

Thank you everyone for your help
