Mods from Mod-Wise

Just had a look at this site and there are some interesting ideas, but I have a couple of questions which you out there may have answers to.

1) I recently had to have a new starter motor fitted (suprise, surprise)due to it's exposure to the heat. It was fitted at Racing Green and I asked if a heat sheild would be a good idea. They advised against it. Any opinions?

2) Like the idea of Mod-wise's boot opening system, but I am not keen on messing with the electrics. Has anyone fitted it and is it easy to fit?

Boot Kit is very good and very easy to fit. Only fiddly bit is fitting the switch by the lock mechanism, but can be done in 15 minutes!

It says that it opens when you hold your key fob near a sensor.
a)Does this mean that it reacts to a standard Meta fob, or do you get a special one as part of the kit?
b)Does the button in the car still work as a backup?

Lots ao twiddly bits that make the boot open. Yes the switch in the dash still works also.definately recommend you buy one the only thing ive wondered is if the magnet will eventually have an adverse effect on the meta fob when you keep them so close together like my magnet inside the fob?

Very very unlikely.

Oh, perhaps you should edit your post about the boot opening system, I know its tied with the central locking but its still a bit of a secret way to open the boot

Anyone any views on the heat shield?

I've recently contacted David to order a boot kit. I've seen them in action, and are a fantastic little piece of kit. You could always get someone to fit it for you at service...

As for the heat shield... I see two thoughts on this. 1) It may keep the heat out.... or 2) it could actually keep the heat in.

I replaced my battery and all my hot starting issues went with it, but that does not mean to say that a heatshield doesn't work.

Regarding heat shield, I think LR got it right in the later RV8 models. Wrap deflects the radiated heat from the manifolds, but traps the conducted heat through the block / bellhousing, double edged sword! LR put a shield (just a bent sheet of ally with brackets) between the manifold & starter - which seems the sensible thing to do IMHO, but dont think it would fit the TVR (chassis rail is in the way) but you could cut one down I suppose.

Best solution is ceramic coating of manifolds / Y, I'm a big fan.. At a cost of less than £300 (just coating) it must pay for itself in reduced heat damage to other components pretty quickly, I reckon.

With a hot start problem, the first thing to try is a relay put back in the Range Rover wiring. Worth a go,certainly would not do any harm. £4 from halfords.

hi chaps.sorry about my reply needing to be edited,i didnt realise it was such a secret?-anyway as i said,definately recommend it,it used to drive me mad with my old griff that i couldnt open the boot until re-entering the car,put key in ignition etc etc etc.now i grin every time i open my boot with the modwise kit,remembering how much it used to wind me up.id say the most usefull of all Davids clever mods.

Convinced on the boot entry front but not on the heat shield. So I guess at least some of my hard earned will be winging it's way to ModWise.
