Hi
At a motor trade show I attended yesterday I was told about the new MOT system.
Basically it should stop the false MOT certificates that currently cause problems.
The basis of the system is a VTS Device which is a computer of sorts which is installed at MOT test stations by VOSA.
The test station have a smart card which when put in the machine not only identifies that test station but accesses the main data base so they can do the test.
The system will print out an individual checklist for the make and model of vehicle to be tested and depending on whether the vehicle passes or fails you receive a "receipt style" MOT certificate.
The history of a vehicles mileage and MOT record will be stored on the central data base so if required it can be accessed to check on a particular vehicle (such as vehicles for sale).
This new system should reduce theft and fraud that is usually associated with the current MOT certificates.
So if your vehicle is due its MOT later this year onwards you will see the new system in action.

The reasons for introducing this system are good in that in conjunction with the new car tax rules it will help reduce the suffering caused to many innocent motorists who are sold cloned or stolen cars and the like

The down side for us perhaps is that if your V5 still shows the donor vehicles details, the tester at his discretion can refuse to Test a vehicle that is clearly no longer a Ford Escort.

Latest news re the new MOT.
It appears some MOT stations now require a weight certificate before they will MOT you Jago or other kit car.
The best way of getting this done is go to a public weigh bridge and ask politely if they can weigh your vehicle and issue you with a weighbridge note showing the weight. Some may do it for free or "for a drink" others may charge the going rate for their weighbridge which hopefully is not too much dosh.
Once you have said bit of paper why not have it laminated or for those who want to do it cheaper clear sticky back plastic so it lasts and does not get grubby when being handled.
