I would like to know if this is possible , and the approximative cost of such a conversion.

Would it also ruin the concept of the Elise in your mind ?

Thx for any reply.

The Elise is Mid Engined and the Honda is Front Engined - It may not fit unfortunateley

In theory it should fit. The S2000 engine is longitudally mounted in the Honda, so turning it through 90 degrees for the Lotus shouldn't be a problem. The gearbox may be a problem however although it may be possible to utilise a front drive Honda box as the bellhousing may mate together with this engine.
Space could be a limiting factor and it is quite likely that some major surgery would be required to relocate certain components.

The boys at Proto Type racing are doing just that, making a new bell housing to join the S2000 to the 6 speed 2 litre type R motor too. I’ve had few email chats with the boyz there and they are in progress as we "type" with the 2.0 litre type R replant and the S2000 replant is next. Check out the web page above.
Personally think the S2000 does produce the power, but it requires alot of revs which for road use could become tiresome ?, but if I had the cash I'd go for the 2.0 Ltr R Type in a heart beat, slightly less power, better torque, less rev's required - 220 hp of Honda reliability, 6 speed & LSD - what more could you want..................PS - Hungryjim don't bother replying to that last bit, you'll show your true colours !!..................................................................

These engines have such a wide rev range that for normal driving you don't need the VTEC at all, its drives like a smooth (relatively) quiet road car should and you will still be much faster than normal traffic and standard Elises.
The fun comes when you feel the need to make a noise and run it up to 8000 or more rpm, it always puts a huge smile on my face, blows the mind of passengers and onlookers.
My car is a sunspeed B18C (1.8L) VTEC powered. I was talking to someone who put their Sport 190 on a dyno and got about 160 bhp at the wheels, I have 192 at the wheels :-)
Note that the standard cooling system will not cope with this kind of upgrade, sunspeed do a lot of work to make the cars really usuable in all conditions.

Prototype Racing are more race oriented and are doing more extreme upgrades, but its better to start with an Exige than an Elise for this, as the bigger wheels and better aerodynamics are important.

I will be visiting Prototype Racing in September to testdrive their Exige development car with the K20A (Civic/RSX Type R engine) conversion and to be instructed on the conversion process, so that i can do conversions for Prototype Racing in Europe. After my visit i will transplant a K20A into my own Elise, the engine is already purchased and waiting. Interested people are ofcourse welcome to visit me and test the conversion.
