Why the Bulge in the Bonnet ?

I know it sounds like the perverbial 'Doctor, I've got a friend....' but an old pal of mine with an interest in Jago's wants to know why the Jeep bonnet was designed with the raised section, therefore taking away the original GP look. Is it for extra strength or to accomodate a Pinto ?
Perhaps someone can throw some light on this and end our curiosity please.

I seem to remember Stephen Smith telling me at the time that it was a design feature, rather than for any extra height or strength issues.

I may be wrong of course, it was a long time ago. I preferred the original star on the bonnet version, but that did tend to flap and twist when it was lifted, so maybe strengthening was also a consideration - there was also some concerns at the time about copyright - I think it was around that time that the Sandero name was introduced, so maybe that is also part of it.

in other words I have no idea...
