So, being an eighteen year old male, insurance on anything interesting is well beyond ludicrous. Specifically, I was quoted 600 a month for full coverage a while back on a 1996 Mustang GT. At the same time I was told that a v6 model would be much cheaper to insure, and not to mention cheaper to buy. Like <$4k sort of cheap, as far as purchase price.

About an hour ago I heard through the grapevine that a friend of a friend rolled a Fox-body 5.0 and has the full swap pulled out and ready to go, super cheap as long as it's out of his shop quick.

Now heres the question. Could I get in trouble for this? As I see it, its a simple matter of parts replacement. The engine broke, the 5.0 happened to be the cheapest thing I could find that would fit. No different from a guy replacing his bad 525i motor with one from a 735i simply because thats what was available, right? I would think that as long as said replacement engine was reasonably stock, one could make an arguement justifying the swap based on cost, not performance. Yes? No?

Nice thought, but the insurance premium will be calculated on known risks. Ie the engine size / performance of the car.

You change any of these, your insurance will become invalid unless you have decalred the change from standard spec. This will usually come to light just after an accident right when you need the insurance the most

The engine may be cheap, but get a insurance quote or it could work out REALLY expensive!!

Best wishes

Chris

So do you think the problem is any sort of deviation from standard, or simply the upwards movement in performance? I was banking on being classed in the same catagory as all the truck and old cars guys around here, who seem to be able to get away with putting anything into whatever they please.

The alternative of course, is to put the engine(heavily modified, in this application) into my beater volvo, creating a sort of ghetto M5.

I think 600 quid on a V8 import at 18 is a bloody good quote actually.

Not an import here, my friend.
Personally, I consider it outrageous. Thats more than the car is worth for a years insurance. I don't know, my birthday is in a few months, I should see a drop then.

sirtophamhat if it's any consolation I'm 40 years of age, have a good driving record and full coverage on my 87 Trooper is still costing me $1,300.00/ year. Washington is the 4th most expensive state for insurance IIRC. How are things in Enumscratch?

Ah - got ya.

Is 600 for an 18 year old on a pony car considered excessive in the land of the free then?

I would say 600 a month is a bit excessive!

Quite a few years ago, one of the apprentices at work phoned up an insurance Co. about insuring a super car, (I think there was a bet going as to who bought the coffee's that day). Anyway he did manage to get a quote on a Bugatti EB110 (we were working on them at the time). He was quoted £25000 / year Fully Comp with a £25000 excess.
Now that a lot

So I just found out the asking price on the full drivetrain is $850. I am so close to pulling the trigger on this deal, someone stop me real quick!

You absolutely need to get the insurance sorted first.

if that's OK, go for it!

Couple of notes.
1) Few years ago, young lad bought an old 1.6 escort paid the high insurance, and then put in a 1.1 engine to try bring the insurance down. Ermm, no - it went up as a modification.

2) Recently had the Taraka done on my Chimaera, told there would be no increase as it's already on max engine size rating (over 3.5l), despite the increase in power.

When I was getting a quote for my diesel Audi, the insurers asked about OPTIONSon the car, not just mods. Had to tell them that I had alloys on it, and the premium went up...

they were the same size as the "standard" ones just a different pattern, FFS!
