Gay marriages - wasted so much parliament time on something that was frankly unnecessary (they had civil partnerships already) at a time when the economy needed sorting first.

Surely government can deal with more than one issue at a time?

Personally I just thought that showed he was helping lead the UK into the 21st century along with many other western societies. It's one thing I think he can be proud of.

The Jury is well and truly out on that one.

His role in the ERM debacle - he was advisor to Lamont. Europe has bitten him in the butt twice, expensive both times.

Or vise versa. Some straight people are now arguing we should have Civil Partnerships for them as an alternative to marriage.

Yes - it was a low priority compared to so much else.

And for GinettaGirl - I did not say they shouldn't be treated equally. No putting words in mouths please.

Well he has resigned and most sane people wish he had stayed in considering the fallout around him.

People are critical of his decision to give the UK the vote on this matter. To be honest though it's been lurking around in the background for years now and the outcome of a leave decision meant it was well overdue. Whether that decision is best for the UK is another matter.

David's motto could be " You can take a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink"

My one displeasure with David, if he has not done this for family reasons, is that as Captain you don't leave the ship.

I feel we are worse off without him at the moment, however history has shown new people who might never had the chance can now shine. I think they will.

As it happens, they aren't. Gay couples can choose marriage or civil partnership. The latter option is not available to mixed sex couples.

Either the Govt should have got rid of Civil Partnership in toto or they should offer it to all.

However the idea that Marriage for Gay people was not import despite the fact that 'they had Civil Partnerships already' was clealy a case of State sponsored inequality despite Puggit's protestation to the contrary.

It wouldnt have made much sense to stay. He had already admitted he was going. Sensibly that would have meant handing over to his successor 12-18 months in advance of 2020. That would mean leaving, probably before BREXIT had been completed. Better to get out now to create continuity. That and his lack of credibility for negotiating BREXIT as a remainer.

This. It was handed to him on a plate and could well be the case for the next one.
