Hi Folks,
Can anyone suggest anything I can do in this fine town tomorrow morning? I am heading to a car meet by train (oh the irony
) so in true Sunday rail style I will arrive in Derby 2 hours before anyone else meets up.
Any suggestions of what this fine place has to offer to the discerning, car loving tourist with nothing but two feet and a jacket to his name?

Take a wander over to the Industrial museum and push the big red button that makes the supercharged Merlin V12 sectioned engine crank over, then watch all the valves and springs and supercharger compressor moving and the big prop on the front rotate. They also have an RB211 engine in a room on its own, you can stand in front of it and imagine you are a pigeon.
Er, thats about it, Derby is truly crap.
Edited to add, just looked it up, its only open 2-5pm, told you Derby was crap!

Well, you could look at the bus timetable as an alternative to the train. Not sure about Sunday services but most days they have quite a regular run often straight along the A52. May save you a couple of hours.
You don't say what time your meet is so it is a bit difficult to be helpful on that point alone but ...
If you land at Derby station there are some options for browsing cars at garages.
If you leave by the front of the station and then turn right and follow the road as if you were driving you will see in front of you a Saab dealer and beyond that a Subaru dealer and just around the corner the Volvo/Chrysler place. I think there may be another one as well. Going in that direction you are heading towards the town centre.
If you leave the 'back' of the station towards Pride Park the local area has many of the other dealerships. VW, Seat, Ford, Landrover, Mercedes spring to mind.
Vauxhall/Chavrolet, Toyota and the others are grouped a bit further out and are less accessible from the station.
If you are heading for the centre anyway (unlikely for a car meet as it is mostly non-car these days) I can point you in the direction of an excellent Italian Coffee Bar. Or just walk past the shops and up to the square with the Assembly Rooms and most of the bars/more interesting pubs tend to be found in that direction.

Sorry about that, as clear as sludge as ever!
Meet is at midday, starting outside Pride Park itself with the www.VX220.org.uk guys. I might take my camera and see what fun I can have photographing the stadium.
I will also check out the bus routes as the trains are truly humourous!

Ah! I think the better Nottingham-Derby bus services go onto the centre without diverting to Pride Park, in which case the train may indeed be a better option despite the timing.
However you may just find a service that goes to Pride Park or the Wyvern Centre (Sainsbury's, Halfords and similar stuff) which would leave you close to the footy ground which I assume is where the meet is occurring.

A bit further than the train but not so far - maybe a mile and a bit?
Odd road layout to cross though but there may be a ped/cycle route that makes it shorter and a more pleasant jaunt.
If you go to www.multimap.co.uk and search for Derby you should see everything on one map.
The rail station is pretty obvious and almost in teh middle. Footy ground to its right. The car places are scattered alind the road which I see has been re-designated A6 between the station and the footy ground.
The bus station is shown by the all red 'london tube like' symbol just underneath where it says "Weir" and just to the left of "The Holmes". Just left of the sodding great roundabout.
The Weir is on the Derwent river - which runs past the stadium (follow the blue line) and there is a path/cycle track all the way. I know as I used it once to cycle in to town to collect my car from service. (Nice summer day and I was feeling reasonably fit then ...)
If the bus timing is better it may be six of one, half a dozen of the other really.
It is not far to walk at all from the train station down to Pride Park. Come out of the station and turn right, keep walking until you see a great big bridge/flyover, you need to get up there somehow, there is a footpath. Once up on the bridge, bear right and go over it and keep walking onto Pride Park. You may find a footpath to the right without actually having to get up onto the flyover. Its all new, business park, car dealers, offices etc. 1st roundabout straight on, 2nd roundabout has Ford dealer and Mercedes/Smart dealer, turn left to get to the stadium, Land Rover dealer at the roundabout, stadium car park and presumably the meeting place, is opposite.
