I own a 88 350i i have recently had a new waterpump
and thermostat fitted as the car used to overheat.
Having not driven the beast for a while i thought i would take her out for a quick spin i got back let her tick over for 5 min and noticed the temperature was
in the red so quickly turned her off after 2/3 minutes
the fan kicked in any ideas?
Cheers

Assuming it's never overheated before, then I suppose you'd be best to check what might have changed to make it do so now.
Is the new pump actually working?
Is the new thermostat opening/operating correctly?
Is/was there enough coolant in the system in the first place?
Airlocks?
Best I can think of for now I'm afraid.
Ther will probably be someone better qualified to answer shortly

Do you mean the fans were running and it still overheated? This can happen if you have air in the radiator. I'm not familiar with the cooling system layout on your car, but on the later models the radiators are not self bleeding. Air that finds its way to the radiator will stay there until it is bled manually. This would also affect cooling on the move, although perhaps not enough to cause trouble with gentle driving in cold conditions.
Oh, and it just occured to me...
If either of the two filler caps were not correctly put back on (seems silly I know) then perhaps you could have lost water as the system heated up whilst on the move, thus leading to steam and overheating when left on the drive.
May be worth checking both caps are secure and that the rubber seals are in good condition.

My problems in the past.
Leakin sealing cap on the swan neck. New cap but the old swan neck seal was deformed so a new swan neck as well.
Heater matrix air lock. Fiited a bleed valve to clear it.
Rad shot. New one fitted.
Now seems to be OK so hopefully no cooling stops for the BBW this year
PS was there a difference to the top hose and bottom hose temps? At running temp it is too hot to touch the top but can hold the bottom OK.

They can be quite tricky to bleed the air out of the rad. after draining / refilling coolant. I find that a slow fill thro' the swan neck, and squeezing of the bottom hose usually does the trick. After replacing the swan neck cap, half fill the main reservoir and run the engine with the reservoir cap off until the coolant is almost overflowing, then replace cap and check that the stat. is opening by the temp. of the stat' hose. Allow to cool and top up the reservoir when cool.
Thanks for the replies water pump, thermostat replaced 2 months ago everything working fine car has been in garage since only started it yesterday coolant checked before i set off i suppose it could be a air lock.
On another matter i need a new battery any ideas which one to buy.
Cheers

Just a thought about batteries and I don't know about sizing, but look into an "Optima". I was told these were designed for the military and are apparently not filled with liquid (at least not water so they don't vent) and are much more resistant to vibration and heat.
They cost about 1/3 more than a traditional "premium" sealed battery but they have 2 times the warranty.
I hope it's true because I've had to replace 3/5 of my batteries in the past year and all have been "red tops". Which makes it 5 for 5 in the past 2 years.
