Removable gearbox mount? Can it be done
Discussion
As I plan for my gearbox rebuild I got thinking
The only reason we have to move / remove the engine is due to the annoying fixed gearbox mount
Anyone ever removed it and replaced with a removable mount so any future clutch changes can be done easily
Who's going done this and if so any pics???

The gearbox does come out without removing the engine
I'd be really interested if this can be done without cutting the chassis? I need to get mine out. Changed the clutch with the engine in place but the GB now needs attention. Thought it was an engine out job?I know if you disconnect heaps from the engine you can tilt it forward but for the faff you may as well take it
I'm all ears

I heard that the Reverend Alan did this many years ago and replaced the small cross-tube with a bolt-on member.
If you search back through PH there might even be some piccies.
Ah think I found a pic http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=127...If you search back through PH there might even be some piccies.
You take off all the usual bits and bobs so the box is loose then the 13mm head bolts on the engine mounts you swap for longer bolts one at a time then pull engine forwards then remove clutch and flywheel and separate bell housing and remove a manifold any one will do then the bell housing can be pulled out then the box comes out !

It's not too bad if you just need to change the clutch. Very little to do and virtually nothing to remove. But I only got my engine forward about 2-3 inches. Which is just about enough to bolt the clutch in. So not sure how that would aid the box removal?I know if you disconnect heaps from the engine you can tilt it forward but for the faff you may as well take it

It's the bell housing what stops the box from coming out you pull the engine forward pull the box backwards then pull out the bell housing I don't see why the cross member can't be cut out and replaced with a bolt in member. The Chims, Grief and S have bolt in front members.
Further more, there is a well carried out mod to the SV6s to provide access o the engine sump. This is chopping out the cross member between the front of the out riggers. Been done plenty of time and the replacement bolt in bars haven't caused an issue yet.
The gearbox mount in the SV6 are bolt in items from the factory. Indeed, been replaced with stainless steel sections without issue.

Hi Glen - Nelly is based on a developed SEAC race chassis and we quite easily adapted it to enable us to drop out the gearbox without having to take the entire car apart. A relatively simple job which has made the old girl far more serviceable...The only reason we have to move / remove the engine is due to the annoying fixed gearbox mount

With the engine and box out you can do so much more with the chassis and its ancillaries - don'y be put off by the job. The only reason we have to move / remove the engine is due to the annoying fixed gearbox mount
